FUNdamental Movement Ideas for Early Years

'FUNdamental Movement ideas for Early Years' is a structured physical play programme of movement and activities for all early years children from walking to 6 years of age. This programme offers 16 different, creative and imaginative themed charts, with their relevant 16 work cards as teaching aids.

Work cards guide leaders through activities on wall chart
Having no order of progression, the leader is able to introduce any chart, or part of chart and work card, at any time. Each themed chart has been designed and laid out as a lesson, with headings covering the following: 1. Warm-up 2. Co-ordination 3. Large Apparatus 4. Locomotory Skills 5. Balance Activities 6. Rebound 7. Action/Rhyme 8. Educational Element 9. Rolling 10. Cool Down Extensions and further ideas can be found on the reverse of the work card with additional hand apparatus, other relevant rhymes and music. Health related aspects, nutrition and social aspects are also given. The programme has been structured as a complete lesson, thus cutting down the leader's planning. ALL lessons start with a warm up and end with a cool down, to comply with British Gymnastics' recommendations. Leaders should be aware of how to make the programme accessible to all levels of ability.
Certificates and Badges
Badges and Certificates can be purchased to reward the children on completion of a theme and as motivation to the children to continue participation. To reward the children who are ready to move into their next development stage, a party theme, with medal awards, has been created in each category.
Funky Cat CD, Medals and Activity Signposts
Special Activity signposts using the characters of Funky Cat and family have been developed to aid the identification of skills by the leader. A new specifically developed British Gymnastics Funky Cat CD can be purchased with the scheme, as a musical addition to complement all the themes.
Attendance Card and Record of Achievement
A record of achievement for each theme can be used to monitor each child's progress. The children need to complete ALL 10 skills to attain a badge and certificate. Every child has his/her own personalised attendance card, which is stamped or dated for attendance in their own sessions, thus enabling them to progress along the steps to purchase merchandise at reduced cost. Encourages regular attendance and increases club participation.
