I simply signed up with geocities and use the programme they have to create the two sites I operate - www.geocities.com/eastkentacro (http://www.geocities.com/eastkentacro) & www.geocities.com/sesatc (http://www.geocities.com/sesatc).

Very simple to use (needs to be for me!).

Geocities are quite good and the easiest use ( I use them too - uk.geocities.com/tallinnphotos/index.html ), but like most 'free' providers, add adverts and have restrictions that can be annoying.

Another port of call might be your Internet Service provider (freeserve / ntl / tiscali, BT Openworld, telewest etc). If you are on internet access where you pay, they will probably give you a certain amount of webspace (usually more than geocities) without adverts. I know freeserve used to have software for making simple websites, and most of the others probably do too. This could cause trouble if you change service provider, though!

If you know a little about computers, a fairly easy way of making a site yourself would be software like Microsoft Frontpage (which a lot of computers have) or even Word. You also sometimes get quite good software for this on computer magazine disks.

All the best - and post the link when you're done!!! :)

You need webspace to start with. I.e. Somewhere to host your website. For FREE webspace with NO ADVERTS go to Portland Communications (http://www.portland.co.uk). As Gingerheid said, Microsoft Frontpage is good for making the actual webpages, it sort of requires intermediate knowledge of webpages though, whereas something like Geocities is deadly simple (I do hate them though). If you need any help, just post here.

So what's wrong with my sites?

The only adverts I ever notice when I'm browsing them is the geocities one in the top right-hand corner which you can close down to a bar. I've never had pop-up adverts when I'm on it: does anyone else when browsing them? I've found geocities much better than it used to be. You can actually upload word documents etc to it now which you couldn't when I first joined.

If you're website isn't going to be massive then you could try it out: I get 15 MB on geocities (doesn't sound a lot I know) but if you view my site I've quite a bit on it and have only used 10.6 MB so far.

I have Front Page and did a course on it - but can't remember it much now, although I do still have the training manuals I got.

I cheat and use Macromedia Dreamweaver for updating the site i am involved in. I know the person who writes most of the code uses notepad though and writes everything in HTML. I used to try that, but it is so complicated!

Space is the biggest thing to consider. You're more likely to get more free space with your ISP than you are with Geocities. Still, as long as you don't end up like our site (TBGN - 1GB!!!) then you should probably be ok wherever.

I'm certain your site's wonderful, Anita!

It's Geocities that can be annoying, even though I used it myself and probably would still recommend it to anyone else too.

I don't know if it's still the case, but when I did my site you couldn't link directly to a picture. So if I put a link like uk.geocities.com/tallinnphotos/aegna01.jpg on my homepage, it wouldn't load up that picture when you clicked on it, even though I have that file there. I had to create the webpage uk.geocities.com/tallinnphotos/aegna01.html, that contains the picture file. Doing lots of pictures (it's all mine is), it was be incredibly time consuming to make lots of pointless pages that only contain one picture each.

But definitely have a go with Geocities, it's an easy way to start off! (And it's where I stayed...)

Come to think of it... I took better photos last year, should update the site now I have a proper phone line again...

I simply upload the pictures to geocities and place them on the pages! Often have to re-size because I forget to make smaller versions before uploading .... but I do have more than one photo on some pages.

I have to admit that geocities is much better than when I first started because you couldn't upload word documents.

Gingerheid - have a look at my sites and tell me what you think (links are at the top of this thread). You'll even get to see pictures of my daughters :D on the eastkentacro site.

Read up for Anita's sites.

And Gingerheid, yes that is a very annoying problem with the pictures. It's getting better though, no pop-ups anymore :)

I haven't really got a website at the moment (I just use the space to store some files) but you can take a look at Ross Brewer's website, which I helped with certain parts of. Just click teh link in my sig. That is using Blueyonder's webspace that comes with most of their services, and made using Frontpage.

Nice site, and ohhh...... I really wish I hadn't missed the boat for sports acro...,

But then...

"This site has temporarily exceeded its allocated data transfer". One of the other annoying things about Geocities...

Blueyonder does cost money, but not if you're already paying to use it ;)

Do the people that you get your internet access from advertise that they offer X MB of webspace?

"This site has temporarily exceeded its allocated data transfer".
Did that come up on my site? If so - anyone know what the heck it means?

My internet provider is wanadoo (ex-freeserve). I have allocated space on that but had major problems trying to upload to the site (I know another club who had made a site and then tried uploading to freeserve and gave up!). No matter what I did I couldn't even get a bland home page loaded. Gave up after a month of complete frustration  and have kept the geocities sites going ..... I admit I haven't tried since wanadoo took over.

I have a fair bit of space with BT Yahoo, my ISP. It's quite good too. That message means the site has hit it's transfer limit for the month/week/day. Free space has a low bandwidth limit, meaning you can't have too many visitors/lots of large files.
