Been watching the diving on the Olympics (wow!) Somebody was saying diving is most linked to swimming, but one of the divers was saying that diving is most linked to gymnastics and they do gymnastics training and conditioning to learn their diving moves and the only link to swimming is that they hit the water instead of a mat and they have to swim to the side of the pool to climb out!!!
I think diving is more linked to gymnastics than swimming, but especially the springboard diving which I think is more like trampolining 'cos you have to bounce first.
What do you think?

I'd say it's much more linked to gymnastics than swimming. The links with swimming include the water, and swimming back to the edge of the pool! As for gymnastics though, there are many similarities. Somersaulting and twisting, body-line, co-ordination and timing, strength (abdominals especially), flexibility (pikes), and jumping.
Ross Brewer used to dive, and there was another recent British gymnast who left gymnastics to go to diving, and came 6th in the British Diving Championships I think.

I was watching an interview with our synchronised diving medallists and they mentioned gymnastic - and ballet if I recall correctly - training.

Did anyone see the person that jumped in the pool, in the synchronised diving, when the Americans were about to go?

didn't see the intruder but heard the commentator say the divers practise their dive moves in gyms long before going near a pool. I also know a few girls from Artistic who gave it up and went over to diving. I was thinking of quiting gym a few years ago and was told not to give up everything but to try diving as it is very similar in the making of shapes etc. Glad I didn't though as I love my rhythmic.

Wow, didn't know Ross Brewer did diving! My mum used to be a gymnast and she's said she used to love diving too (mainly springboard though, she said she hated the high board!!) There seems to be a lot of links between gym and diving then.
And I didn't see the person jump in the pool  I've got some diving recorded on video, I'll see if it's on there!

They also practise moves on trampolines (i think). I would love to have a go at diving... Another sport to add to the list of things I never get round to doing lol

Did you see the womens high board - there's even a dive that starts from handstand, so it starts like a handstand push ... that's definitely more gymnastics training than swimming!
