View Full Version : Back Flic!

I still can't get it right after all this time! I've been told to keep my legs straight ('cos I keep bending them!) and to keep my feet behind me instead of bringing them over my head like I'm doing a tuck back somi but with putting my hands down on the floor! I've been told I've got to go into a handstand half way through my flic but my feet just want to shoot straight over the top so I'm always off balance and come crashing down onto my ankles (or even my knees sometimes!) I've tried everything but it hasn't worked, my body just won't stop in a handstand shape half way through

Does anyone have any tips that might help me to practice and to make the flics right pleeeeeaaaaaaaaze?

It's the only thing that's letting me down on my floor routine at the moment!

(Yahay - just noticed - 100 posts, I'm a senior member!!!!!!!!)

If your coach can take the time to work it with you, see if you can do lots and lots of supported flics back to a half bridge position (ie half way through the flic). If you have to work them by yourself, try making the flic as long as possible as it is difficult to bring your legs up over the top in a somersault type shape if you are stretching right out to make a long flic. It can also help to do flics on a crash mat (oops - safety landing module) over to land on your front, rather than on your feet so that you do not feel that you have to get your feet over and down to the ground quickly.

I learnt mine at home on an old mattress with my mum supporting me ..you need to think walkover rather than somi (is your trampolining clashing at this point as flics travel?). Keep trying you'll get there in the end.

Yes I know what you mean Lucy about the trampolining, my mum keeps telling me what you said Sue, that I should make it longer so I don't over rotate, she keeps making me lean further back and going off balance before I throw for it. I do tend to nearly do flics on the same spot sometimes, like my hands nearly land where my feet have jumped from (my mum says I could do a flic on the beam sideways on the beam instead of longways down the beam!!!)

My mum's done a few with me where she stands in and makes me stop in a handstand, I had my mattress off my bed all day yesterday practicing them!!

But I haven't tried the one on the crash mat yet just landing on my belly, that sounds like a really good idea. Three coaches and another gymnast were all trying to work out exactly what I'm doing wrong at gm last night!!! I've got a comp in 2 weeks time and I'm doing floor for our novice team so I really need to get it right! I'll get my mum to get my mattress off my bed again today I think!

if you can do a walkover you're on your way to learning a flic. It's a long time since I learnt them but I know you can use shaped foam blocks as an aid if they are available but you do need someone to support you while your learning them.

I learnt to do them (many, many moons ago) in my bedroom from doing backward walkovers, then on each one I'd swing my arms a little more and start jumping onto my hands till it resembled a flic, then it was just a case of making it look more like a flic by gradually starting to take off two feet instead of one (I'd keep my lead leg in a little more each time I tried). It was good practice for confidence building before I got to the gym.

One of my daughter's friends at gym learnt them herself by leaning back to bridge and kicking over with two feet, then she started gradually jumping back onto her hands, similar to what I did I suppose but she went straight for the two-footed approach (I wasn't that brave!)
