Just posted on another thread about when I was at school trampolining and it reminded me of something ......

Little history lesson: when I was at school the covers at the sides of the trampolines were pathetic and didn't cover the elastics. I can very clearly remember my brother performing some move or other (I don't recall what) but he landed on the elastics with one leg either side of two of them  . Thank heavens it was two and not one ;) but (in his words) he walked with a lisp for days!

:s That sounds the tiniest bit painful!!!
When my Mum used to do trampolining - once upon a time - they didn't have any covers at all on the springs!!!
Her and her best friend and two lads used to stay behind at school in the sports hall and get the badminton courts set up, and get out a trampoline ... They were allowed to due to *lack of* health and safety, when there were no teachers or qualifed people around!!!
One night though, she was doing a front somi, and managed to go flying forwards, ending up with her head inbetween the springs, and body upright and unable to move!!!
Her friends attempted to find a member of staff or anybody at all, but no one was there!!!
I think after a while they slowly moved her, and she just had to suffer with her neck and back for a little time!!!
Luv Kel!!!

/me cringes

I know someone who got their toe caught in the bed once, and also someone who straddled a parallel bar from great height.

Ouch.

Kelly - you're Mum's school sounds like mine was. We were able to make the holes in the ceiling in the gym because there were no teachers around. If I recall our trampolines had a small amount of padding on the edges but not covering the elastics at all. I never actually had any accidents on the trampoline, which was surprising considering the height we used to get to hit the ceiling (it was high - higher than a lot of school gyms I've seen). The worst accidents I had at school was tearing a muscle in my back during a netball match (couldn't breathe for the pain) and breaking my big toe playing tennis (on grass)!

DJC: the parallel bar one makes ME cringe!

One thing guaranteed to make a lad at our gym cringe is seeing a man go into splits: with force! One such person is a nice Welsh acrobat (hello James if you read the forum) who does round-off flick to splits - straight into splits with no hands down! Adam goes pale at the thought!

Lol!!!
That's pretty mad Anita!!!
What did you use to make the wholes though?!?!
I'm really intrigued!!!
And the flick into splits ... Has that guy got something missing?!?!
(i'm not on about sense!!!)

when I was at school we did our trampolining in the cricket nets, quite frightening get your toes stuck in the top luckily they always came out on the way down!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif Another time I remember being a bit short in my double back and landed on hands and knees with my thumbs through the webbing,http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon9.gif I`m sure I dislocated and relocated them as they were swollen for weeks. I think I didn`t do double backs for about two years!!

Yeah sounds a bit scary with the nets Pete!!!
And i'm always scared of getting my fingers stuck in the holes in the trampoline!!!
One girl once managed to get her toes stuck, eventhough she was wearing really thick socks!!!
Must have had strange feet!!!
Hehehe!!!

Just remembered[prompted]http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon12.gif my other half used to do back somi and front somi into splits on the trampoline which was especially funny when Carl furrer [ex world champion] was taking requests for moves for him to demonstrate. His face was a picture when it was demonstrated for him.lol!!!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif

Hi
I am a rhtyhmic gymnast so don't have much call to use a trampoline. Just started at secondary school two weeks ago, I decided to go to the after school trampoline club. It was ok, a bit slow and simple, (i did some basic stuff when I still did artistic). We were then asked to pack the trampolines away, (so much for health and safety!!) and one girl got her wrist caught in the tramploine as it folded. Her wrist was a very strange shape when it was finally released and needless to say she went off to hospital quite quickly. The P.E. teacher asked me the next day if I had been put off, I said I was thinking about it!!!

Ouch...

I teach a GCSE class at a secondary school and the pupils have to assist in putting out and away the trampolines, but I always supervise the folding and unfolding and so far in 10 years all has been ok. We have 2 trampolines and one is super snappy when its folded away, so I hang off the back to slow it down. The other one is really heavy and I have to stand the wrong side to get the momentum for tipping it up. But if anyone was to get hurt, it would not be the kids.

I once dislocated 3 fingers when someone folded the trampoline down onto my hand (The legs were kicked out and it pinged). But after a visit to the hospital I went back bouncing the same day all strapped up !!!

I'm getting the impression that the setting up and folding down of the trampolines is more dangerous than the trampolining itself!!

I must admit, when I pick my daughter up from trampolining I'm quite happy to assist in putting the mats away, but I draw the line at helping put the trampolines away (including the DMT), I'm never quite sure what direction each leg and bit of it is going to go and I do worry about trapping my fingers ... so I leave that bit of packing up to the experts!

That is really poor supervision, everyone should be warned of the dangers involved and warned how to avoid them. Accidents can happen even with well trained people but at least they are less likely if they've been told what to do.

Ha the boys at my club think straddle jump is totally evil and its quite funny to watch their attempts. I've never caught anything in the webbing, but i take my ring off and never wear any other jewellery too afraid to forget about it like other people I know, you hear too many horror stories.

Eek! I knew I should have stayed out this thread!

At least I'm on the way back from bouncing and not the way there.

...Says the man who broke his leg straight bouncing...if that didn't put you off not much will:p

I did officially give up when that happened!:)

(However thankfully I was able to see sense and change my mind a long time before I was fit to go near a trampoline again, so it didn't affect me much.:D)

Actually KayJ had to miss out on a gym comp last Easter because of an injured knee caused by landing a straddle jump badly on trampoline! As she landed one knee bent forwards (like it should), but the other knee bent backwards - the poor girl was in agony, she couldn't walk on it for 2 days! She was supposed to be doing a gym comp that weekend but still couldn't walk properly, and certainly couldn't run.

Is that what happened to you Gingerheid when you broke your leg?

I can quite honestly and truthfully say I have absolutely no idea whatsoever. It had seemed like a perfectly normal bounce (though it was what would have been the last one before a somy so it should have been more powerful). To me there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, apart from the fact that my leg broke, obviously!:D

I guess I was probably leaning to one side, or had my foot turned in or out, or something like that. I have a bad habit of killing the bounce before the somy and doing the move really low, so if I'd done that it maybe could have been something to do with that. Neither of the people that saw it knew what had happened either, and consequently didn't initially believe that I'd actually hurt anything (the bounce looked OK, so it looked like I was saying I'd hurt my leg when I landed on my back in the foam pit!)

It was a bit unnerving at first. It would be nice to know what it is you're wanting to not do again!

Yes I know what you mean, if something goes wrong it's nice to know what went wrong so you don't make the same mistake again!
