View Full Version : Let's have a waffle off topic

Anita
4th June 2004, 01:10 PM
There have already been moans about going "off topic" so I've started this thread to move the off topic waffle to when we start it (I'm just a guilty as others).

I know that one of the reasons for so much waffle at the moment is just to get the board running until more people join.

Please everybody, let's try not getting narky and sarky with each other.:(

Sian
4th June 2004, 01:16 PM
Good idea Anita, I'm also guilty I'm afraid for unexpected 'waffle'. But I'm sure it is good for you...

So many directions to go... hmm I pick... Big Brother! That's bound to take us places. Who's watching it at the moment?

Sian
4th June 2004, 01:23 PM
I dont watch it... Its never really appealed to me to be that interesting, but its a personal opinion.

Sian
4th June 2004, 01:24 PM
ooooo yay I'm a member!! hehe I didnt know there was a blob-type-thing anymore...

Anita
4th June 2004, 01:30 PM
Don't watch Big Brother that much now - I lost interest when they starting choosing people for their sexual orientation rather than their personalities and the hope that they'll get people, well you know ......

The earlier BBs seemed more "genuine" somehow.

Sian
4th June 2004, 01:41 PM
Yeah I know what you mean, its all a bit desperate now to get people to watch.

DJC
4th June 2004, 01:43 PM
I doubt very much that you could have been picked for this series if you weren't part of a minority group. I do think they've succeeded in their efforts to make it more dramatic though. Big Brother turns Evil was a good idea though, with the lowered ceiling and raised floor, the slanted walls and angled mirrors, the house would be horrible to live in. Also like the the alarm, and I love the fact that by the end the prize money could be £0!

Anita
4th June 2004, 01:47 PM
Goes to show I haven't taken a lot of notice - didn't know any of that (apart from the fact that I would have had to be in a minority .... which I'm not).

I'm very stressed at the moment, typing one particular doctor who has verbal diarrhoea (does 2-3 page letters with lots of totally irrelevant stuff). I need to find something to lighten myself up, especially as it's my wedding anniversary today :) . Perhaps I'll think about home time .....

Sian
4th June 2004, 01:47 PM
Suceeded in making it more dramatic to keep people interested! If it had been similar to the earlier ones, not as many people would have watched it.

Sian
4th June 2004, 01:49 PM
*Happy Anniversary Anita!*

thinking of home time is always good :) but i am home, still trying to revise!!

DJC
4th June 2004, 01:51 PM
Happy Anniversary :) Thinking of home time when I'm at school always cheers me up, however, I am at home now revising.

Edit: I seem to have turned into a parrot!

Sian
4th June 2004, 01:53 PM

Sarah
4th June 2004, 01:53 PM
Yay I've just managed to register. I think big bro is poo this year with all the weirdos they've picked! What is ahmed all about, standing around perving on everyone! Think it will be funny tonight though cos someone is getting evicted. Bit unfair though just because kitten broke the rules. Must shut up now, sound like a proper fan!

DJC
4th June 2004, 01:55 PM
Biology on Monday, but no maths for me on Tuesday; I did it last year a year early.

Where to go next...

Sian
4th June 2004, 01:58 PM
I'm not very good at maths, o well!!

Welcome Sarah! Its not that you sound like a fan... Its just that you are more knowledgeable about it!! wow i used a big word... and it looks as though its spelt wrong!! :p

Anita
4th June 2004, 02:05 PM
Thanks for the anniversary wishes - I'm beginning to think I'd rather be here at work than where you two are right now :)

Sian - Nope - you spelt it right!

Maths - I loved maths and school and actually looked forward to maths exams (sick or what?) ;)

Hello Sarah.

Sian
4th June 2004, 02:12 PM

4th June 2004, 02:23 PM

Sian
4th June 2004, 02:35 PM
I'm not too keen on them reality tv programmes.

Dave
4th June 2004, 02:38 PM
To be honest neither am i but watching Im a celebrity get me outta here and Hells Kitchen its highly amusing ! Espically when Ant and Dec mess things up and Gordon Ramsay gets the hump with edwina....

Sian

Anita
4th June 2004, 03:30 PM
If I'm really only 21 then I got married six years before I was born!;) . 27 years today - you get less for murder:D .

Really though - they've been 27 good years and hope for many more (a few ups and downs but then that's life).

Dave
4th June 2004, 03:35 PM
27 years !!!!! Thats not a bad achievement considering some people don't even get past the first 12 months........
I've always seen the day i get married as the end of my life ! But im a pawn in the game off life and will end up getting married one day and like most people it will be good for 2 years then it'll be hell till i die....:(

DJC
4th June 2004, 03:46 PM
The bottle's half empty then! Try and be more optimistic :) I know plenty of people who have happy marriages for plenty more than 2 years. Just got to be the right people.

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Anita!

And thanks all for reminding me that I miss nothing by being too tight fisted to pay for a TV license!

PS - I've just decided I like the new forum. I can make posts on my phone - not just view them :)

Laura
4th June 2004, 04:26 PM
hmmmmmm, i'm meant to be revising aswell! Oh well- it's not like I need these GCSE's to get into college or anything! Only another 17 exams to go and I'm free for 2 1/2 months! :D

17 exams ????rather you than me....
I know! I've already done 10! That's what happens when your school kindly decides to enter you for 15 GCSE's

Sian
4th June 2004, 05:25 PM
Ah I'm only doing 9 GCSE's, 15 exams or something like that. It was going to be 10... but I had to drop History. I had a fool of a teacher, didnt teach me anything and lost all my coursework. It was hopeless to even attempt the exam! But 15 GCSE's!!! wow thats a lot of work!! (coming from someone who hasnt done very much... lol)

Laura
4th June 2004, 05:32 PM
Yeah, it's too much really, considering you only need 5 a-c's to get into college! I was meant 2 be doing 16 but I managed to get out of one but I then regretted that coz I missed it! :o

xxx

Sian
4th June 2004, 05:34 PM
Well I think you might just be able to get 5 A - C's... With 15 GCSE's you could get into college several times over!! I'm hoping my 9 will do!! Lol how do you manage to keep on top of it all?!

Laura
4th June 2004, 05:46 PM
I really don't know how I've managed! There have been some close calls and some phone calls home about my work but what can you expect! Plus I'm out 3 nights a week at gym and 1 night at church! Bring on college I say- only 6 courses!

Tasha
4th June 2004, 06:01 PM
Im in year 9 and have just chosen my options so what would you guys say are the best to do ?? Stupidily my school where going to dance but the teacher is pregenant!! xxxx

Gingerheid
4th June 2004, 06:26 PM
Obviously enough to pay for a good phone though :) What phone is it?

Mmm waffle :D

It's the original Orange Smartphone. I don't have a landline, so it's my modem too. Very highly recommended phone, but you do need a certain amount of patience to put up with some of the things it does to you...

About exams, what do people think is best - doing them all at once and gettiog them out the way, or doing them a little bit at a time? I did 3 or 4 a year for three years from 13. Much less stressful I thought, but lasted a long time...

Loopyloz
4th June 2004, 06:53 PM
Hey everyone, just thought I'd post. If I'm not around soon it's because I'm addicted to The Sims again (I really should have learnt my lesson last time around). It's one of those games where you start playing it and when you next look at the clock about 3 or 4 hours have gone by, scary, lol.

And on the topic of exams, I think more spread out is good, I nearly had a nervous breakdown from my exams being so close together last month.

Laura
4th June 2004, 07:13 PM
Tasha- I definately recommend PE at GCSE, and Music (even tho I hated it!) was really easy!

As for when to take them, I took 1 a year early and the rest this year and I prefer taking them all in one go- gets them all out of the way instead of dragging them out.

HIa thnxs Laura for ur advice , im scared about my GCSE's already !!! AHHH has ne 1 done french ?? is it easy ?? xxxx

Laura

Sian
4th June 2004, 10:20 PM
Lol never did french... did german though, no other choice!! PE and Music are my favourite, they are really good. Hoping to do PE for A-Level.

I prefer to drag the exams out, but thats because of my condition and cant write for hours on end and if i have a bad day on a exam, thats it. So my exmas are being sent away with letters explaining that my best work will be coursework. Also I lose concentration easily and then I forget things!! I'm a mess really!!

Anita
4th June 2004, 11:14 PM
My youngest fell asleep half way through her RE exam (it was a compulsory exam). Not surprisingly she achieved a fantastic "N" grade:) .

In her defence she was ill with a really bad dose of flu - unfortunately she was still ill the next day during her PE written exam so didn't get the grade she expected, even though we got a doctor's note to say she was ill - her teachers said they didn't think her illness was taken into account. She was ill for about ten days altogether because she ended up with a bad chest infection.:(

Sian - don't be put off by this as you have an on-going diagnosed illness and not a dose of flu!

Good luck all those taking their exams.

DJC
4th June 2004, 11:20 PM
Good luck all those taking their exams. That includes me, so thanks! :) I'm doing 11, I have no idea how I would cope with 15. I don't mind doing them all at once actually. As for choices, I can't say much apart from I really like french actually, and erm don't do business studies! IT isn't all it's cracked up to be either, although it's not too bad.

Is that the SPV 100 GH? I like those phones, although I now have the Nokia 6600 :D

Sian
4th June 2004, 11:36 PM
Thanks Anita, hopefully they will take it into consideration. I already have extra time and rest breaks, but a hopeless occupational therapist with the most ridiculous suggestions for strategies!!

As for choices - I never got the chance to take business studies, something i would have liked to have done. I did a year of it when I lived in Ireland, which was about three years ago now, and i did enjoy it. But my school stopped running that course :( o well!

Gingerheid
5th June 2004, 12:28 AM
I agree about Business Studies. I started it at A-Level, but realised pretty quick it was a bad idea.

A Level Economics was interesting, but very hard. Had me up till half four in the morning very regularly...

Is that the SPV 100 GH? I like those phones, although I now have the Nokia 6600 :D

It's the first one, just plain SPV - the one that was released with more bugs than a jungle! But still very good - couldn't live without a Windows phone now. It is out of contract - I am just waiting for the E200 to come down in price a bit more now (must keep my old everyday 50 contract with 1p min o/p calls - would be bankrupt without it!)

5th June 2004, 02:05 AM
Tasha, I did French both GCSE and A-level and I loved it, A-level was really difficult but GCSE wasnt too bad (mind you I was one of the last years who were allowed to use a dictionary in the exam). If you like the subject now I'd say go for it, it's always good to be able to speak another language.

The other subjects I took GCSE were PE, history and art. All were pretty good subjects. But my advice is to pick what you like now, and no matter how difficult it gets you tend to get stuck in because you enjoy the subject (that's what I did and at that moment in time I had no idea of what career path I wanted to take at all.)

Laura
5th June 2004, 12:34 PM
Tasha- don't take Graphics! I thought it would be a good subject but the coursework was really tough and took ages! I hated it!

One subject I did coursework for was Classical Civilisation, in the form of a 25 page essay on Athenian Democracy.

Now don't get me wrong - Athenian democracy *is* an interesting subject. Just not necessarily always 25 pages worth of interesting.

I thought the amount of time I had to spend on coursework (given the small parts of the syllabuses they covered) was a very disproportionate amount of the total time I spent studying.

Sarah
6th June 2004, 02:21 PM
Good luck with your exams guys! I've just finished my uni second year exams. I only had 6 which was bad enough so feel sorry for people doing 15! Remember those days, especially Design Tech which was compulsory at my school aaahhh. Don't worry though, it'll all be over soon then u have a nice long holiday!

10 weeks! It's obscene: some of us only get four weeks a year ...... five with bank holidays.

Hope you are all going to help your parents during the holidays - especially if they both work. Nothing worse than working five full days a week and coming home to nothing done at all .......

Good luck with the exams though.

Gingerheid
6th June 2004, 10:35 PM
10 weeks! It's obscene: some of us only get four weeks a year ...... five with bank holidays.

Poor Anita - you're in the wrong public department! You'll need to get transferred to one where you get five weeks annual leave , plus 10 and a half days bank / public holidays, plus up to 3 days flexi leave every four weeks (up to 5 twice a year)!

Hope you are all going to help your parents during the holidays - especially if they both work. Nothing worse than working five full days a week and coming home to nothing done at all .......

Was that directed at other households, or one with which you ought to be able to communicate without using the internet, me wonders! :)

Anita
6th June 2004, 11:12 PM
Definitely other households - I'm not that subtle at home!

Picture the scene - I arrive home after a hard day's work to find yesterday's washing still in the machine and it's a lovely day outside:mad: . Do I ignore it and say nothing:confused: . NO I don't - I decide I'm too tired to cook dinner and desperately need a cup of tea. Do I get one? Definitely;) .

An angry Anita is definitely to be avoided :p

Gingerheid
6th June 2004, 11:20 PM
Good for you :)

I'm trying to think what my mum would have done - not sure. Wouldn't have been worth risking letting a remotely similar situation develop.

As far as I can get is that it wouldn't have been my mum that went to make her cup of tea :D

Anita
6th June 2004, 11:31 PM
I forget to say - I was generalising for a lot of workers on holidays.

I actually get 25 days a year (goes up to 28 next year because I'll have been employed by them for 10 years) plus bank holidays. I can also do flexi time but have to take it as soon as it gets to 10 hours (can't save it up too much!).:)

Anita
7th June 2004, 12:04 AM
I definitely don't get the tea myself.

One thing that gets to my girls more than my anger - is when I'm feeling down and simply burst into tears. They can't do enough for me then :) .

Gingerheid

7th June 2004, 09:38 AM
Got another topic of conversation for this thread. Just had an e-mail from a colleague that had a list of "instructions for stupid people" and I thought I'd reproduce one for discussion:

On a Japanese food processor -- "Not to be used for the other use."

The comment underneath was: "now, somebody out there, help me on this. I'm a bit curious."

Anyone have any ideas (keep it clean, please).

Dave
7th June 2004, 11:14 AM
Morning to all ! How was everyone's weekend ?

Anita
7th June 2004, 11:39 AM
The weekend was fine, but busy. Our local Council had organised a "passport to sport" day and we were doing free gym sessions all afternoon: manic would describe it!

The only problem with the weekend is that it ended and I had to come to work today ......

Dave
7th June 2004, 01:51 PM
Mine was pretty tiring as after the competition in stoke i took the week off from training and went back saturday just gone ! Although im not aloud to tumble i still managed to tire myself out by spending 40 minutes stretching and then trampolining and then 30 minutes hard condition plus i was back in the gym pulling weights sunday.... Then i had to get up early and come to lonfon for a training course so im pretty tired....:(
