View Full Version : How would you teach a 1/2 twist to crash dive???

This was also something that was demonstrated on the course, but the guy didn't really explain it very well ...
We were told to do 1/2 twist to front drop, (which i think is reasonable) but ...
Then the next (and final prep!!!) was to stand with your feet facing a diagonal, then twisting your upper body so that it's facing the opposite direction. Simply do a forwards turnover ...
Obviously that was totally stupid too and gave you no insight into a 1/2 to crash.
I see it as being a straight back take-off, then twisting just before 12, holding the crash dive position, then land in a back drop like normal.
I might be very wrong, but that's just how i perceive it, especially as it is sometimes used as a progression for a full back.
So how should a 1/2 to crash be done and how would you teach it?!?!
I just want to know out of interest!!!
Hehehe might try it!!!
Thank-you!!!

Hi Kelly, I sometimes use the format of the twist the body and forward turnover but only when the performer lacks in two departments i.e. confidence and poor feet/hip drive.
Sometimes it helps the fact they can see where they are going, as the confidence grows they can reduce the "cheat". I would say that its worth trying out then if you find someone is struggling with 1/2 to crash you can pass on that experience.http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon7.gif

Not everyone has the confidence to just hurl themselves into a 1/2 to crash another method is a caught and turned over 1/2 to front but it's not practical for all subjects. We get people to build up from the 1/4 twist and then aim to get them looking at the end deck for as long as possible before they twist.

So how do you develop the twisted body to a straight take-off twisting in the air rather than out of the bed???

Reduce the twist gradually, its just a numbers game! I always say "dont cheat use your feet"

I still don't get it sorry!!!
Lol!!!
I think 1/2 to crash looks wkd and i'd like to try it, but i want to do some good preps first - i didn't like the twisting out of the bed into the forward turnover method!!!

Just re-read your original post and the only thing I would say about the way you perceive the move is the twist starts a lot sooner than you think. If you wait until 12 o`clock you would be unsighted for most of the move.

You would expect to have the twist completed by the time you were in a horizontal plane so that the rest of the move is a crash dive. Some people get the hang of this quite quickly but others can struggle to come to terms with the amount of effort required [feet/hip drive] to get the take off correct.

To complete this move the take off and phasing into the twist is of the highest importance and provides the solid basis for most of the backward twisting single/double somersaults.

Sorry Kelly if you end up being more confused, but a picture paints a thousand words and its a lot easier to show first and tell after. Pete.http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif

Ok thanks Pete!!!!
Yeah i think that makes more sense now :)
Might try it at some point - just get a nice big crash mat thrown in!!!
Hehehe!!!

Could always stick it in a twisting rig and do 1/2 twist to handstand. That'd probably get your twist in the right place. (i thought the prep they taught us on the course was very strange too)

Could do it in the twisting rig, we were going to try the full thing, but soon realised back landings would be painful - didn't think of trying half twist to handstand!!!
Will have to see if one of the coaches is up for it!!!
Never been in the twisting rig before, only the 'normal' one!!!
Hehehe we tried (just out of interest) doing baranis in the normal rig like on the course, but ours is too padded and i ended up getting tangled in the ropes and landing in a big heap!!!
Ahhh i will be the first to use our twisting rig if i dare!!!
Lol!!!

you can sometimes get away with wearing the normal belt but loose enough to twist, that way back landings shouldn`t be a problem [if you wear a leotard to training the belt should twist round okay]http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon7.gif

Yeah that's what we did on the course, and tried it back at my club, but the padding was to thick and it just kept sticking, we loosened it loads, but it still didn't work :(

You can do the build up to handstand but please don't go for the back landing in a twisting belt :D

Hey Kelly, If you get real good at 1/2 twist crash you could then work it off a lazy back.

So you get a good lazy back then push out strong from the bed and 1/2 twist into crash dive and then follow with a barani ball out, great add on moves!!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif

Arrrgggh somebody else who likes that combo. One of my coaches at uni has been trying to bully me into doing it for ages. Luckily my other coaches have intervened deeming half out preps more important.

Rosie, If you are doing 1/2 out preps you shouldn`t find that the combination is that differcult, however Its not the sort of combination you would put in a routine.
Then again I have seen some whacky routines done by students,http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif but I would be little bit disturbed by the fact you felt bullied!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon9.gif
I suggested that the combination could be done as something to play with although there are important learning preps in alot of play moves, unfortunately sometimes this is overlooked in the chase for bigger/higher tarrif moves.

you could try half twist to front first maybe......

Ah cruises (front 1/2 to front- but not like a turntable). One of my coaches, (who to be fair doesan't really coach me often) is slightly fanatical about cruises am not sure why. He seems to think that its the key to teaching almost any twisting move. I'm sure there must be logic in his madness somewhere

hehe I cant get the hang of those, feels really strange to me, but i can see the logic in them, which makes it even more frustrateing for me. groan.
