The gymnastics arena proposed for the 2012 games is expected to hold 16 500 people! This will be in the dome (Artistic, Trampolining and Rhythmic Gymnastics.)

If you want to see a computer-generated image of how big it will be, go here: Gymnastics in the London 2012 Olympics (http://www.london2012.org./NR/rdonlyres/1348AC98-A1B0-42B7-80C1-C4E21CDC4B92/0/Gymnastics.jpg)

Remember to Back the Bid (http://www.london2012.org./en/support/register/backthebid.htm) and Sign The Flag (http://www.signtheflag.co.uk./) too!!!

Can it be assumed that if acro goes into the Olympics in 2008 as we've been led to believe then it will be held there also??? ;)

it should be really as it would save quite a bit of money. i think it's good that they would make use of the dome again for something. wouldn't it be a bit low for trampolining though? minimum height about 10m?

So... they've come up with the first potential good use for the dome. For a time twelve years after it was first built!

I`m I the only one in the country that prefered it not to be in London, its a nightmare travelling in and out as it is!!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon11.gif

And a $6 000 000 000 (6 billion dollar) funding scheme planned for transport from 2005 until 2012 won't help? If we get the bid then transport during and after the Olympics will be fantastic from what I've read in the candidate file. Line extensions, brand new lines, new stations, new trains and loads more.

I've got to admit that I don't particularly like London's transport either - had to go there in rush hour every day for a training course for my work, and spent each day thinking that I was so glad I wasn't facing another 42(+?) years of the underground every day.

However - on balance I'd probably have to admit that it's the only city in the UK big enough to be able (or the city in the UK closest to being big enough) to host the Olympics or to use all the facilities that would be left over from an Olympic bid.

What I find a bit of a pity is that the country can't host the Olympics rather than a city. That way the facilities would be spread across places where they could be best used, and the whole event could be larger without overwhelming one place. If another city was able to host all the gymnastics events for example, there wouldn't be so much of a problem about including things like Sports Acro or DMT in the Olympics. There would also be less of a problem with transport / accommodation and so on.

Gingerheid - you're talking sense. That just won't do: people with sense don't get on :p

if we really want to get the 2012 games in London it might look like a more serious bid if sports funding was being increased rather than cut, what message is being sent to the rest of the world by cutting development?

Overall, they have (albeit by not much more than inflation).

They just haven't given it to the important sports - ie, ours.

The funding has increased overall, just that it's distribution has been shuffled. As for country-wide developments, 3 of the major arenas and their contents will be distributed around the country after the games.

I would imagine that like commonwealth games a lot of events would be spread around the country i.e. football in the various stadiums, canoe events in sheffield, equestrian events at Babminton, don`t exactly know where they would put beach vollyball though!!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon7.gif
