I have heard it said many times that as you get fitter you get more effective at sweating, but I don't know if it is true. If you have heard this too, where did you hear it from, and do you know why? The top gymnasts never appear to sweat at all but I am totally blinded by it and couldn't realistically complete a floor routine without wiping my face.

Some people sweat more than others regardless of whether they're fit or fat.

Oh and women don't sweat - they perspire! :D

Isn't it - horses sweat, men perspire but women merely glow? (!!! )

Tis true! (although some people do naturally sweat more) - I did this in PE. Basically, when you exercise the main way you keep your body cool is by sweating. An athlete who has adapted (through exercise/training) to keep the body cool during exercise will shunt blood to the skin's surface more quickly and release heat from the body. At the same time the sweat glands increase their output and so cool the body through sweat evapourating. Therefore the fitter you are the more effectively you keep your body cool = the more you sweat. Training harder, for longer, in hotter and a more humid environment, will also make you sweat more. Hopefully that has been some help to you :)

More I sweat, the more my legs get slippery, the more chalk I put on my shins, the more hairs I rip off!!! lol.http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif

So how do you guys cope with this? Judges aren't exactly sympathetic to it - all that effort on a light and feminine routine and then either shake the sweat off or wipe my face over or fall from the blinding when it gets in my contact lenses. Can you buy something to stop it? I don't sweat much from anywhere else but my forehead absolutely teems.

Just had a thought, anti-perspirant roll ons work quite efficently, I might try it on my legs tonight at training. http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif

Don`t know about using something similar on the forehead, maybe to close to the eyes!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon11.gif

I know that people with really severe hyperhidrosis (insane amounts of sweating) can get a prescribed powder which is regular deodorant in a stronger and unscented formula. Wonder if I could get hold of any of that? The non-facial ones you can buy OTC (Driclor, driclor hands and feet, Perspirex - total dryness!) but not the face one.

Good point Stephy i agree sweating is the bodys way of cooling down so surely if your sweating more than others you must be working harder as your body needs cooling down quicker....

just to confuse the matter when i started gymnastics again in december after some time out injured i came back and hardly sweated at all even though i was workign hard to regain fitness, now im in full swing and doing a mens 4 and a mixed pair i sweat more as i work a lot harder and my body is more conditioned to the pressures i put on it...
