hey Kel, how did you get on at the gradings, I think you said it was this weekend just gone!
That is to say it was last weekend; not the weekend before, but the weekend like yesterday which was Sunday. Unless you have a long weekend in which case its still the weekend!!!
O.K. did you get all that!
Pete.

Hehehe yeah i think i just about got that Pete!
Our gradings were on Saturday (weird region, always have Saturday gradings!).
It didn't go very well unfortunately ...
My set felt really awful, especially after having a really good few weeks at training managing quite a lot of 8.3s and 8.4s and even one 8.6.
The judges were marking quite harshly, but i felt i got better marks than i deserved - 7.9s across the board.
I was supposed to be repeating set, but i would have needed 8.6s across the board (not going to happen!) especially with the rule for the judges on our panel - if it does not line out at 12 it can only get a 0.3!
So ... i just rammed a vol together, the common straight back, straight barani, pike back, pike barani, tuck back, tuck barani, tuck back to seat, 1/2 twist to feet, tuck, pike front, but moved the basic so i did straddle after the straight barani and took out the tuck.
I didn't manage to finish the routine once in warm-ups, but just about held on in the comp, scored 7.6s i think (the worst marks i have ever had!!! very ashamed!!!), but then to top it i got my pike back disallowed because apparently it was straight ... I understand the angle and everything for it to be seen as straight or piked (135 degrees i think), but i always whack my feet up and i did see my toes, so i don't know how it was straight!
Anyway that meant i didn't get tariff for it :(
Moving onto finals, repeated vol, scored 7.9s i think, but it may have been 7.8s, much better, and got full tariff (4.7).
In my controlled warm-up for finals i shouted the shape of each somi i was doing just to make sure, and when i competed i think i did the tightest pike back i possibly can!!!
Overall 2nd out of only 4, 0.2 off 1st which was annoying after the pike back thing, and it was also my first competition that i didn't score an 8 - that was probably the worst thing!
Also dropped a whole mark since last comp!
Anyhow it was a great day - i got to see everyone from my old club, got a lot of stick from them (great banter, it was all in jest!), and my club did brilliantly.
I also got a lesson from Peter Heames about difficulty judging and stuff, so i spent my revision time before my English exam this morning writing all sorts of different routines, ranging from like a 3.5 tariff through to a 20.9 tariff i think it was ... Would like to see someone do the 20.9 tariff, infact i would just like to see someone do a full in rudi out triff piked ... 12 2 0 3 > tariff = 2.3
Hope that's right!!!
So there you go, i went quiet for a while, but that's just made up for it!!!
Are you doing nationals Pete?

peter edge
14th June 2005, 01:15 AM
Full in rudi out triff eh? I`m sure some ones doing it! I know that I`ve seen rudi out triff for sure. Well its a shame about the weekend but I`m sure you got something positive out of it, maybe you should of shouted out your shapes in the actual routine instead of the warmups, no deductions for talking to yourself only a visit from the men in white coats.lol!!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif
I personally hate that marking in club it tends to either raise or lower the expectation in the comp with hardly ever the right result, however if you do better than what they give you in club I suppose it could be a good result!
The more comps you do, you will get a feel for how your training is going and what a realistic mark you will get.
Try to train with the idea that on your worst possible day when nothing is going right that you will come away with minimum 8.0 on your set, getting into/out of shapes and holding your line outs is what reduces deductions.[whoops, a quick coaching spot!];)
finally; yes I`m going to Nat`s, I`ve even qualified for mens this year[whoo, hoo] I`d thought those dizzy heights had passed me by years ago!!:D

Kelly Jordan
14th June 2005, 03:53 PM
Rudi out triff ... Fun stuff!!!
The marks i get in training can range anything from 7.7 upwards, an average mark for me would be about 8.2, but for me getting good marks before a comp helps with my confidence!!!
I hate it when i think i've done something quite well then get told it wasn't very good, but i also like to be told something is awful when it is bad, likewise when i have done well be told so, that way i know what is good and what isn't and try and get into the right frame of mind!!!
Useful coaching tip too thanks :D it's something i'm just starting to get used to now (holding my body tension, rather than doing the shape, lining out, but then going floppy and not lifting properly into my next move!).
Hehe and well done with qualifying for mens at nats, i'm still looking at the possibility of going to watch, so if i do i will look out for you!
What kind of routines do you do as your set and vol?
Do you go more for form or tariff or are you just good at both hehe?

peter edge
15th June 2005, 12:34 PM
Hi Kel,
Age group set,1/2out[p],d`back[t],1/2out[t],back[s],barani[s]back[p],rudi,back[t],1&3/4[t].b.b.out. mens set: rudi out[t],d`back[t],1/2out[t],back[s],barani[s],back[t],back[p],1&3/4[t],d`bounce roll,b.b.out.
both routines have more doubles than I actually need but it works for mehttp://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon7.gif
My vol will work out at 10.5 although I did manage 11.8 last week [much whooping on my behalf!!!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif]
Do you go more for form or tariff or are you just good at both
My aim [as always] is to complete the routines the best I can, on the day!
I can feel another tip coming: always compete for yourself, never compete against the other guys. The judges will decide who wins/is the best. Its the nature of our sport I`m afraid.
Cheers Pete.

Kelly Jordan
16th June 2005, 09:33 AM
Wow they're pretty kewl routines!!!
I would just love to be able to do half that stuff!!!
Well good luck to you :)
What is your aim at Nationals???
Any score or kind of position or anything???
Don't worry, i normally do compete just for myself, but as i'd managed to mess that up, i needed a new target - so it became position!!!
11.8 that's pretty amazing!!!
What routine was it???
Ahhh damn i have to go do my Spanish oral now ... Hola!!!
Lol don't worry, i learnt Good-bye last week (you'd never know i'd been doing Spanish for nearly a year now!)
Adios!!!

peter edge
18th June 2005, 11:23 AM
Hey Kel, I`ve just looked at the routines I wrote and guess what, you can do half of them!! 3xback somies and a barani with a barani ball out that makes 5 moves.lol!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif
Hopefully if everything goes well at the nationals close to the top ten would be good and per chance of a final place would be fantastic, bearing in mind that there will be nearly a shed full of british squad guys taking up the final slots and I`m giving them 25 years.
An 11.8 routine goes like this: rudi out [p], 1/2in1/2out[p], rudi out[t], d`back[t], 1/2out[p], 1/2in1/2out[t], 1/2out[t], d`back[p], 1,3/4[p], rudi ball out.
I`d like to say that I`m doing this routine loads but i`ve managed it just the once so far, maybe I should up the the differculty and it should make it easier to do! There is logic in there, somewhere!!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon11.gif
Pete.

Kelly Jordan
19th June 2005, 09:58 PM
Lol you make me laugh! :p
I think upping the difficulty is a great idea! :D
The best one is doing the hardest routine you ever have done on comp day, never practising it before ... Adds an extra target!
Well good luck with nationals, i am sure you will shine, especially with all the experience ;) lol!
Keep me updated on how it's all going!
Only a couple of weeks away now surely?

Thanks for the good luck Kel!http://80.68.90.51/memberforum/images/icons/icon7.gif

I`m not saying my training sessions are usually easy but I really struggled tonight, must have something to do with only having 3 hours sleep in the last 40,well its actually 42 hours as I write this!!http://80.68.90.51/memberforum/images/icons/icon11.gif

Kelly Jordan
20th June 2005, 10:55 PM
Yeah 3 hours sleep in 42 hours may have had just the tiniest effect lol, and with this weather too - i don't know about where you train, but where i was tonight it was just ridiculous ... They don't know what air-con is!
I love the summer, but not great training conditions!
My suggestion was pack up and move outside, also click fingers and make a mahousive marquey (spelling!?) appear to put the trampolines under! :D
Must admit, it was a fun session tonight, a couple of girls doing double backs - i hadn't seen them do them before - looked good :D
Just out of interest, how often do you train and how long are your sessions?
Do you do a very long warm-up or much conditioning and stuff?

peter edge
21st June 2005, 01:47 AM
Conditioning? Crikey! the body can`t take it anymore.lol!!http://80.68.90.51/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif
I usually warm up with back- baranis and stick a 13/4 B.B.Out on the end. I tend to train only for 1 hour which I split into half on sets and second half on vols, however one half may run into the other depending how the routines are going.http://80.68.90.51/memberforum/images/icons/icon14.gif
I trained last night [sunday 9-10pm] the next time I can get a session is friday but I should be able to get sat/sun/mon/tue as well although it isn`t always the case, working shifts makes sure the training is erratic.http://80.68.90.51/memberforum/images/icons/icon13.gif Sometimes I go more than 2 weeks without! I`ve actually gone from grade 1 to the next grade 1 without training not the best situation but over the years I have got used to it.http://80.68.90.51/memberforum/images/icons/icon11.gif
P.s. reason why I do such a short warmup and get straight into routines is, it mimics the competitions.

Kelly Jordan
21st June 2005, 04:34 PM
Lol, sounds good!!!
I love it when people can go without training for ages, and just get on and compete and do really well - it's pretty amazing!!!
Lets just hope you get a bit more training than none before nationals :p
Are you a coach aswell?

peter edge
21st June 2005, 10:07 PM
Yeah, I`m a club coach took me about 25 years to get around to doing it!!lol.

I`d like to get on the next one but its awkward getting work and courses to line up and everything appears to be geared up for coaches to run clubs which I have no interest in doing whatsoever.

My other half has her club which I coach at, I also help out coching at the club where I`m managing to get a lot of training and also the club for which I actually compete for and [theres a lot of and`s in this!] Welsh national squad.http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon10.gif

What club do you compete for, but which club do you train with, and what's your wife's club called?
Are they all near each other?

Thanks Bronagh!!!
And Pete - there was a good reason i dropped Geography!!!

Hmmm - well we'll have to see about that one!!! :o
Still i'm only 15, plenty of years left yet!!! :D
Just a bit daunting i only have next year at U18, then into the big wide world of 018 - i bet i still won't be able to see over the trampoline while pushing a mat in then!!! (sad isn't it!!!)
Ooooh i just thought about my story from last night - i put it on the other forum, i'll copy and paste it onto here, might be quite entertaining!!!

If Ards is the NI comp in October - then i'll be there!!! :D
Hehe i'm not great on soft beds either - i like them, just not really any good on them, not really used to soft beds (2 years of bouncing on half inch and 6mm beds!!!) - apparently i perform best on a half inch :D - promising or what?!?!
Well good luck and see you there :D

Bronagh Patterson
