Well its peformed to music and includes elements from artistic gymnastics, but it excludes the flicks, somersaults and tumbles.
Hope this helps. And competing in it is great fun!

Its a bit more than that. Take a look at my sisters site www.rachelmurphy.co.uk (http://www.rachelmurphy.co.uk/) or read this
Sports Aerobics presents dynamic moves, strength, flexibility, co-ordination and musicality in a routine, lasting less than two minutes. The routine is performed in a 7 x 7 m area. The categories are: Individual Men and Individual Women, Mixed Pairs, Trios and (from 2002) Groups of 6 gymnasts.
· The winning routine shows clean and balanced moves with good technique. The routine must include twelve moves from the various element families, which present dynamic and static strength, flexibility, balance and the ability to perform dynamic jumps.
· The competitor must also demonstrate combinations of aerobic steps and sequences, including the seven basic aerobic steps: Knee Lift, Kick, Jacks, Lunge, March, Jog, Skip.

Good site of Rachel's! It has given me a little more insight into the sport anyway! As a WA coach and mum of WA gymnast and trampolinist, I was also a little lost on what Sports Aerobics consisted of ... I think I had a vision of somebody doing a Reebok step routine, but without the step!
And CONGRATULATIONS Fran on being the Forum's 100th Member :D

did anyone see transworld sport a couple of weeks ago?.....they had a bit on Sports Aerobics. It was about a French guy (sorry can't remember his name but I'm sure someone knows) that does it and he's one of the best. It was really interesting and good to see that all the gymnastic diciplines are getting more coverage!! Can't wait till they're all in the Olympics- not sure it'll ever happen but I can live in hope!!!

That would be great if all the disciplines were in the olympics definitely!
I would like to have seen that..I always seem to miss tv progs!
The most famous French sports aerobics (or should i say aerobic gymnastics) competitor i can think of is Gregory Alcan - pics in photo gallery here i think.
Is this him? (trying to post pic here - hope it works!)

Yep that's him!!!
I always watch transworld sport, its really good beacuse it doesn't just show the most popular sports like most shows. They don't often have gym on it but over the last few months there has been quite a bit (sports profile on khorkina, acrobatic gymnastics! and aerobic gymnastics!- I really didn't see the point in BGA changing the names but anyway) You should watch- channel 4 saturday mornings...EARLY!!! (usually at 8 but sometimes earlier) I hadn't really heard of aerobic gymnastics until my gymnastics coach started doing it. Do a lot of retired artistic gymnasts change to this dicipline?

I know that Natalia Ilienko-Jarvis from Heathrow aerobic gymnastic club came in from a successful artistic career, and due to such a high profile gymnast switching to aerobics gave credibility to the sport in that club and pulled a lot of decent gymnasts to it. Heathrow are the most successful club in the country.
If gymnasts drop out in their teens due to too much competition etc in artistic then they could more than likely drop in to sports aerobics and achieve good competition results due to their previous training.
Btw what is your coach's name that does sports aerobics?

Yeh I knew she was coaching there. My coaches name is Danni Codd. I don't think she's doing it at the moment because of problems with knees, ankles etc but she did go to heathrow.
