View Full Version : Which sport to you hate most?

I was going to sit at 99 posts but I'm in a chatty mood tonight ....:p

Anyway - thought I'd start a new thread. I know the favourite sport of all you forum members is gymnastics (in one form or another) but which sport do you most dislike: either to play or watch - and why?

I can't stand watching cricket (I'd rather watch the kettle boil) - it's so slow.
For playing - I hated playing hockey because I was always getting my ankles bashed and, being short, quite often got hit in the head by the hockey sticks of the taller girls.

I cant stand tennis! We got made to take it in P.E but its just so boring! It could be down to the fact that i can't actually hit the tennis ball! lol :p

Tennis is great! Cricket is dull to watch, but I like playing it. Hockey is great to play, and I don't think I've ever watched it. Running: Horrible to do, and rather boring to watch, especially long distance. I'm sure there's others I'm not keen on, but I'll have to think of them...

I can't stand hockey and netball!! I used to live in Ireland, so we never played either of them two sports. So when I moved here three years ago, and everyone knew how to play it, and i didn't, i just kinda never tried!! I just cant understand how they work... so the teachers quite frequently put me in matches to teach me. i either stood in the corner somewhere or ran around like a headless chicken! :D

I liked netball, I was on my school's netball team, goal attack, I was good *grins*
I didn't like hockey, shin pads were not worn due to fashion reasons (silly looking back on it I know) and hockey balls and sticks to the shins really hurt. I'm not really fond of tennis, mainly because I'm extremely bad at it, lol. I hated cricket, again because I was rubbish, and it's rather dull to watch. I didn't like athletics at school either, we always used to do lots of running, and I am not a running type of person, lol.

I can't follow cricket, possibly because I'm on the wrong side of the border. I've never been able to work out what they're doing or what it's about. But whatever it is they do, I always thought that like with most sports, 90 minutes of it would be enough! Maybe that's just the philistine within me though!

I don't think the scenery changes fast enough if you're running. I think you need to be cycling so you can actually get somewhere! But when it comes to running round in circles, definitely pointless! (Along with table tennis, at which I don't think I have ever successfully managed to return a ball!)

Just for you Gingerheid ....

A Guide to Cricket:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes
in and the next man goes in until he's out.
When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been
in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.
Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and
when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.
There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they
decide when the men who are in are out.
When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have
been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not
out, that is the end of the game!"
:confused::confused::confused:

Thank you Anita - that's classic :D

But one thing I still don't understand. How does that all take five days?! :p

As I said, I don't like watching it, but playing it is fun. There's something about hitting something as hard as you can with a wooden bat... :D

I've seen that before Anita, but it's still great :) First read it in an e-mail entitled "Teaching Cricket to America" or something similar. The one I read also had something about the square and the oval I think, I'll try and dig it up.

I used to get taken to county cricket matches when I was little with my dad and big brother. I like to shout and chant and collect autographs. I once shouted "Geoffrey Boycott's rubbish" and the Yorkshire supporters sitting near us all cheered!

I think snooker is SOOOOOOOOOOO boring to watch (especially when it replaces gymnastics for coverage!!!)
Fishing has been on tele as a sport before -

Our club lost a very good gymnast to cricket! She made the County team and was captain of the Under 15s within a year: aged 12. Hopefully she'll be playing for England one day.

I used to enjoy fishing when I was a teenager (went with my Dad and brother) but watching it ...zzzzzzzzzzz

I have to agree with lots of other people who hate hockey. Not only getting your legs hit all the time but having to run while bending over and holding a big stick... can't see the fun in it really. But then I'm not a fan of running really. All time worst sport must be cross country. We had to do it at school every week and it is just the worst thing ever especially in the rain. As for watching, think cricket and golf have to be the worst. So slow and boring!

Anita
20th June 2004, 01:42 PM
You know why PE teachers favour cross country don't you  .

No - it's not to help build up your stamina etc but it's so they get to "teach" without pupils ;) . They send you all off for half an hour or so and go put their feet up with a cup of tea or something (with one of my PE teachers it was definitely "or something" because the boys always had their cross country at the same time  .

Well, I hate cross country and long distance running coz I always feel so ill after doing it yet I still do it fairly often and I always convince myself before I start that I'll be fine wen I finish but I never am!

I have a confession - I always managed to get out of cross country!

There were a number of reasons:
:( one is that I had a problem with one of my knees (the shin bone [tibia] in my legs were growing quicker than the fibula which, in turn, affected my knees and one kept "collapsing" on me which I played on ....
:) the second was that I was good at "field" events (javelin and high jump mainly - strange for someone only just over 5 ft tall) and we could occasionally opt to do the field events, depending on the teacher ....
:othe third was I simply skived! We'd run out of the school gates, cross the road to the cemetery opposite and spend half an hour or so sunning ourselves in the corner, joining in with the main pack when they came back.

I never did one cross country run in five years.

Cross country, i hated cross country mainly cos i couldnt run and had no stamina, i used to be lazy in PE unless we were doing something i liked..... I always remebered one particular lesson where we were doing gymnastics and the PE teacher wanted me to show the whole class how to do a front sommie over a box off a spring board and i said no.... he called my mum into school as i said he was the teacher and he should demonstrate ! He wasn't to pleased when my mum agreed with me......:D

Anyways i waffled slightly off topic there.... ( its amazing hopw often we do that )
I would have to say that the sport i most hate playing is rugby, as i was small at school i used to get put on the wing and i ALWAYS ended up with the ball and 10 people jumoing all over me.....

Anita

I used to hate football till lately and I've started getting into it a bit. (One of my friends at gym is a goalie - she's only about 3ft tall but she's dead powerful!)

I was nearly in tears last night after England lost on the penalties in the 1/4 finals  It's all my friends at school have talked about all day!

I`ve been thinking about this one,and to be fair there are few sports I dislike but what about sports you wouldn`t want to do, there is a lot of extreme sports out there great to watch but wouldn`t want to do them. I think the guys in the superbike series are really amazing and i`m certain I would`nt like to try base jumping.

DJC
28th June 2004, 11:46 AM
base jumping.:p Haha. I seem to have neglected this post recently, just noticed some earlier posts. Cross country. Evil. I have no aerobic stamina, and can't run at anything faster than a slow jog for more than 20 minutes or so. Our cross country course took 35 minutes for the fastest runners! I never skived off it, so did it 5 years in a row, but I always hated it. Strange you say you were good at high jump. I was the second best in our year at high jump up until a year ago, and I'm 1.57 m tall! I was also good at hurdles. And yes, you've just reminded me, watching extreme sports is great!

Anita
28th June 2004, 01:06 PM
OK DJC - going to show my age now. What's 1.57 m in imperial measurements (feet and inches - I understand that!).

DJC

5'2'' I think :o

Anita

You're right! I did what I should have done in the first place: went to the shed and got my husband's tape measure (one of metal ones) and checked. I'm 1.54½ m tall :D .

Hey DJC, tell you what is strange I never said any thing about being good at high jump! Now heres the spooky thing I was the best in the school at high jump, I was at the time 5`6 and also could jump that height from either foot thats about 1.60m in new moneyhttp://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon14.gif. Base jumping is leaping off skyscrapers or mountains then parachuting down, unfortunately being blown back into the rockface maybe a case of "spitting into the wind"with dire results!http://www.british-gymnastics.org/memberforum/images/icons/icon9.gif
