Maybe I'll take some time in September. Or October. Or November ..... Or.....

Perhaps we ought to play for sympathy so that all the forum members have a whip-round and send us off on holiday somewhere exotic!;)

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who is 'holiday-less' this year! All this talk of Turkey / Lanzarote / Florida (that one I'm really jealous of!) ... just think of me sat at home also catching up on work (I know what you mean on that front Anita!) and potty training my twins  while you're sunning yourselves! Might go for a weekend in Blackpool or something!

I'm not going away this year either- I've never been abroad! I turned down the annual family pilgrimage to Newquay (long story) in favour for College but I am going to Shepton Mallet for a week for Soul Survivor- that more than makes up for it :D

Actually, I think the holidymakers may be in the minority!

I had two lovely breaks (I recommend Tallinn!) that I really shouldn't have taken last year and the year before. But this years' got put off to 'next year', and I'm starting to realise that next year won't be any better...

(I've wasted too much money going up and down to England for interviews. They never gave you enough notice to get cheap travel :()

I'm lucky I got 4 days in Barcelona for my birthday and we've just had a week camping in Porlock, Somerset which was very economical and great fun!
You don't have to spend a fortune to have a good time. Just keep an eye out for cheap flights and you can see most of europe without spending a fortune. We don't book accomodation in advance in most places as it's quite often cheaper to book in when you get there.

I know how you feel Dave, even now I'm still wishing I was in Turkey. The first day back here was the worst, when I went outside and instead of having the lovely warm Turkish air hit me, it was the cold english air that hit me :( I still reckon it's too cold here for summer, lol.

Arrived back at Gatwick at 06:30 Sunday morning after 2 weeks in Orlando, Florida. It was a fantastic holiday, probably the best I've ever been on. Went to all the Disney parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney/MGM Studios, Animal Kingdom, Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach & Downtown Disney featuring DisneyQuest and Cirque du Soleil), Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure, the Kennedy Space Centre, Cocoa Beach, and a load of other attractions. Temperature frequently hit 35 °C (95 °F), tropical-like, with high humidity and flash thunderstorms most evenings. Flight was 8 hours, and time was 5 hours behind, so still feeling pretty tired. I know for a fact it was a very un-economical holiday, but it was the first time we've ever been to America, and I doubt we;ll be doing it again for a long time, so I say it was worth it! (Not that I paid for much :o).

Right now I daren't - TPTB are not happy that I'm not doing a five day turnaround with clinic typing and I'm trying to get up-to-date before I take any more time off! The trouble is, every time I get almost there I take a few days off and am back where I started ..... I get no back-up, temps or help of any kind! At the moment I'm putting in at least three-four extra hours a week (unpaid) to try and catch up. *%^£( NHS!. If you'd like to know where all the "extra funding" the Government has been ploughing into the NHS goes I can tell you - into over-paid managers who run audits and collate information for the flippin' league tables! Our Trust has just been awarded "2 stars" - and we're falling apart at ground level but the bosses can't (or won't) see it.

PS: can you tell I'm a little ticked off at the moment???

The NHS could definitely do with less managers! My partner tried to explain the management structure of his temp position to me the other day, it gave me a pounding headache just trying to remember who reported to who.

I don't think he ever quite got over his first month when a system needed to be arranged between him and the wards and he was told he wasn't at the right level to talk to the ward managers. He went ahead and spoke to them anyway and sorted it out but apparently he should have passed it on to his boss who would pass it on to his boss who would then go and talk to the ward managers:rolleyes:

Maybe we should complain about it more often and remind some of them that we all pay for them to be there.

Anita,
I think u should tell all your bosses that they need to arrange cover for you so you can take some leave..... Sounds like your have to many managers and not enough workers...... Is it any wonder the NHS is in cahos..... one thing i dont get is how can the NHS go from being the best health service in the world in the 80's to the worst in the 90's and present day????????

That sounds like a dangerous suggestion. The resulting formation of a working group to set terms of reference for a feasability study to identify the medical administration staff need could lead to a recommendation that a more cost effective service could be provided by a smaller number of distance managed and out-sourced support staff located off site.

I once applied for an administrative job in the NHS (it had a lot more money than I was getting then). I wrote an A4 page of complete rot on the application form and was invited for an interview. Thankfully I got offered promotion to down here and never had to go! I can spout drivel, but not always with a straight face :D

Anita

Spouting drivel seems to be a pre-requisite of being a Manager in our Trust;) .

The latest load of rubbish I have to do is list everything I have in my office that is not "patient related" in otherwords everything that isn't a patient file (or my clinic lists/filing) other than that I've got to make a complete list of files, books, catalogues etc and estimate how much space they take up!. Well a BNF is an inch thick A5 size book, Mims is a 3/4" thick A5 size book, then there's the piles of x-ray forms, CT forms, ..... etc etc. Luckily I've not got too much in mine but the girls in the office next door (the "chest" office) have all their patient leaflets etc. As if we don't have enough to do:( .

Gingerheid
22nd July 2004, 09:45 PM
Do you think there is a small possibility you are about to get a smaller office (to make room for the executive facilites for some manager or another)?

Anita
22nd July 2004, 10:13 PM
Not when they see how many patient records I have in there! My counter-part's office is worse than mine (there are two Consultants in our hospital who specialise in diabetes - mine is one as part of his role [does endocrinology mainly] and hers does only diabetes). You can't open her office door properly for the amount of notes (files, patient records or whatever you want to call them) she has in there!

Perhaps they're trying to save space with the new builds by telling us to get rid of everything that's "not patient related"!;)

Gingerheid
22nd July 2004, 10:33 PM
Hmmm. Either that or some of the patients. :D

My only suggestion - take two weeks off. That way it wouldn't be you that failed the 5 day turnaround. It would be whoever was supposed to do two jobs in your absence!
