08/07/13: The British gymnasts have begun well at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan (RUS).
The women’s team led by double Olympian Hannah Whelan, along with Danusia Francis, Charlotte Lindsley and Rebecca Hall placed 6th in their team competition on the opening day scoring a combined 155.700 points. The event was won by the Russia team (175.500 points) which fielded four members of the 2010 World Championships Team, their winning margin of over ten points took the gold ahead of Japan and Germany.
Hannah (53.150) and Charlotte (49.750) progress though to the all-around final, with Danusia in to the floor final qualifying in third with 13.750.
On the second day of competition Britain’s men’s team - Ashley Watson, Sam Fern, Matthew Firth and Mitchell Jarvis – placed 12th scoring 250.250. Once again the Russians took the gold (273.150) with Ukraine placing second (269.950) and Japan in bronze (269.700).
Matthew Firth scored 84.550 to qualify for the all-around final.
