Introduction
British Gymnastics resources and awards are designed to help and support coaches and teachers to develop gymnastics skills in the most effective way whilst encouraging a sense of motivation, challenge and achievement in the gymnast.
They are progressive in structure and simple to administer. They ensure development of core skills such as balance, strength, flexibility and co-ordination and are based on the concept of completing one level of skills before progressing to the next level. They provide the gymnast with the motivation of earning rewards for their achievements in the form of certificates, badges and medals.
The programmes have been designed by professionals from the sport of gymnastics and the world of education. The teaching of skills is increasingly supported by resource packs incorporating coaching aids and highlighting key teaching points.
Interest in the sport has never been stronger. Several hundred thousand young gymnasts enjoy the sport in schools, leisure centres and in BG registered clubs offering a pathway from beginner through to Olympian. The programmes help build the necessary foundation skills and are linked to the National Curriculum. We are pleased that the new schemes have earned the endorsement of the Association for Physical Education (afPE).
Resources and Award Scheme Structure
The Proficiency Resources and Awards provide for the development of core gymnastics skills and are used extensively in clubs as a development tool for recreational and competitive gymnasts, in leisure centres to support coaching and provide direction for recreational classes, and in schools to support both National Curriculum teaching and after school classes.
They are targeted at children of junior school age and above and are supported by an excellent resource pack. To download the Proficiency Awards leaflet, please click here.

The new Advanced Proficiency Resources and Awards is aimed at providing support for the coaching of more advanced skills for use in clubs, schools and leisure centres. The scheme offers a range of activities including Fitness, Floor, Vault & Rebound, Apparatus, Pairs & Groups, Hand Held Apparatus and Dance & Aerobics. It is suitable for older children of late primary and secondary school age and includes a compulsory fitness module.
The new Pre-School Proficiency Resources and Awards scheme is designed by professionals from the sport of gymnastics and the world of education for use in pre-school environments.
The Pre-School and Advanced proficiency awards link seamlessly into the Proficiency Awards.

It is divided into 3 sections; Levels 1-5 developing foundation skills and the 6-10 and 11-15 developing more advanced work.
