The 2013 AT&T American Cup was held this Saturday March 2nd at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Great Britain were represented by first year senior and reigning junior all-around British champion,
Gabby Jupp and 2012 Olympic team bronze medallist,
Kristian Thomas.
Both gymnasts were up against tough competition with the likes of promising US first year senior Katelyn Ohashi looking to take the title for the women and Germany’s all-around Olympic silver medallist, Marcel Nguyen ready to challenge the men.
It was in the end Ohashi's day as she powered through all four apparatus, with an incredible 15.333 for her beam routine to score an overall 59.199 to take the women's title. Teammate Simone Biles, also a first year senior from the US followed closely in second scoring 57.666 with an outstanding and flawless Amanar vault that we have regularly come to expect from the American team. Canada’s Victoria Moors was hot on her heels with 57.066 in third.
For Britain's Gabrielle Jupp, this was her first senior competition and major international. She didn't disappoint and has gained many fans from the event, after placing 6th all-around (55.665) and second on the beam (14.433) with numerous upgrades. Jupp was continuously commented on as one to watch with her confidence and artistic flair and she will look to build on this fantastic achievement as she moves forward in 2013.
In the men's competition, the US again took the top spot, with Jake Dalton finishing with a score of 89.398 and placing first in four of the six apparatus, proving he is consistent across the board. Oleg Verniaiev (UKR) took the all-around silver (87.298) with 2012 Olympic all around silver medallist, Marcel Nguyen (GER) in third (87.031).
Britain's Kristian Thomas finished in 5th (85.831) although a few errors left him out of the medals his strong performances such as his floor routine (15.400 and second) proves why he is still one of the top competitors in the world.
