Equality, Diversity and Inclusion - British Gymnastics

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

We believe our sport should be open and accessible to anyone who wants to be involved, whether as a gymnast, a coach, an official, a volunteer or a fan. We are committed to treating everyone with dignity and respect and ensuring the gymnastics environment is one where everyone can thrive. We value diversity and recognise the need to ensure people with different experiences and backgrounds have a voice in shaping our sport, enabling us to best meet the needs of the wider community.

Our key objectives are:

To ensure equality is embedded as part of our culture and is visible in the British Gymnastics strategy;

To develop our evidence-base to provide a clear rationale for our aims and objectives and to measure the impact against our agreed priorities;

To ensure functions, key policies and procedures in all areas of activity that include a visible equality dimension are screened and undergo a full impact assessment where appropriate;

To implement a range of strategies to increase awareness and gain support and commitment at all levels of the organisation.

Statement from the British Gymnastics Board:-

“We recognise the value of having a diverse Board and are committed to progressing towards greater diversity within Board and leadership positions”.

Equality Policy

At the end of 2019, we achieved the Advanced level  of the UK Equality for Sport (which is a framework aimed at improving equality, diversity and inclusion within Sports Governing Bodies and similar organisations). We continue to work hard to be inclusive into everything we do.

Supporting equality & inclusion in gymnastics activity

We are committed to supporting the inclusion of people with disabilities in gymnastics and other under-represented groups including diverse ethnic communities. You can find a range of case studies on Club Hub to help you to be more inclusive in the activities your club offers.

We also have a wide range of other resources including our Disability Awareness Module, e-learning courses, videos, templates and FAQs. Click here for more information.

Inclusion of trans people

Our policy on participation of trans people in domestic competitions aims to ensure that there are no unnecessary barriers to participation.
