European Games Success for Becky Downie

B Downie European Games 2019
Becky Downie starred for Team GB on the final day of gymnastics at the European Games, claiming silver on bars.

Becky produced a masterclass on the uneven bars, scoring an impressive 14.400 points to take silver, with the final gymnast Melnikova pipping her to the title by just .066. Like Giarnni, Becky has battled through injury but has demonstrated at these Games that she’s returned to top form.

She said after: "This was about delivering two clean routines and proving to myself that I can still do it and I'm still good enough, because those thoughts are always in the back of your mind. It feels great to have a medal around my neck again and know I’m moving in the right direction."

Elsewhere Giarnni Regini-Moran placed 6th on vault. On floor, the judges rewarded him with a score of 14.233 which secured the first Team GB gymnastics medal of the games with Georgia-Mae Fenton 5th on beam and Brinn Bevan 6th on parallel bars. Giarnni’s floor routine was spectacular.

All-around finals
The all-around finals took place on Saturday (29th June 2019). After a successful qualification, it was Giarnni and Georgia-Mae Fenton who competed for GB.

Giarnni had a difficult start to his competition, counting a fall on pommel horse (11.366 points), whilst on rings he had to battle through some wobbles (12.733).

He got back on form with a trademark vault scoring 14.700. On parallel bars he impressed with some huge swing elements across the left of the bars scoring 14.166. On floor he showed all his twisting, tumbling skills to score 13.966 and ended well on high bar with 13.333 for an all-around total of 80.264 and 13th place.

Georgia-Mae began on uneven bars where after a nicely performed routine she took a big step forward on dismount to score her 13.800. On beam she had trouble with her spin early on and the routine continued to be a challenge for her, she did manage to stay on and dismounted well to score 11.700. Her floor routine was beautifully performed with some steps off her tumbles to score 12.566. She ended her competition on vault scoring 13 trying her new double-twisting yurchenko to give her a total of 51.066 for 8th place.
