This year, the TeamGym English Tournament & Championships returned to City of Newcastle Gymnastics Academy (Sunday 8th May) and what an event it was! With top class Teams from across the country, including medal winning Teams from this year's British Championships, the quality of gymnastics was high. We were delighted to be joined by Saltire from Scotland, adding an 'International' flavour to the competition!
The Event Team at Newcastle certainly know how to manage a competition, with everything from bacon sandwiches on arrival, tea and cakes, England flags and decorations, a warm Northern welcome from staff and volunteers and, of course, lots of medals to be won. Every Team was cheered, encouraged and applauded by a large and enthusiastic audience and with almost every seat filled throughout the day, it was a great 'TeamGym' atmosphere.
The Tournament attracted a mix of Level 4 Teams, some from 'Primary Challenge', other gymnasts gaining more competition experience and working 'out of age' and some moving from Micro into Full Team competition for the first time. It was good to welcome Teams from Milton Keynes, Richmondshire, Saltire and Harrogate to this event once again. The Championships included a number of Teams that had competed with distinction at British Championships in 2022, representing Portsmouth, Crewe & Nantwich, Scarborough and the home Team, City of Newcastle. Richmondshire and Scarborough battled it out for medals in the Inclusive and Disability sections and for the first time at the competition, two trail blazing Teams from Richmondshire and City of Newcastle entered the new Adult Beginner and Adult Elite sections. The event was truly inclusive with something for every TeamGym Team and gymnast.
Well done everyone and thank you particularly to Enid Harrison who organised the event again this year. Also, thanks to the team at City of Newcastle for all their much appreciated hard work and support and to the Judges who did an excellent job throughout the day. Not forgetting, all the Coaches, gymnasts and spectators who made this an enjoyable day for everyone.
