The rising number of clubs and gymnasts wanting to take part in competitions has inspired our committee(s) to look long and hard at what we offer. Recreational competitions at club and which are regionally organised are usually the starting point for most. Some want to move further up the competitive ladder and compete nationally, while many others are quite happy to stay at recreational level.
A constructive and achievable recreational competition structure has been in place within General Gymnastics for a few years now, and the entry level of some 2000 gymnasts at our last London GfA competition (comprising of 8 different levels) means that we are getting it right. Success at each level, as well as achieving a threshold “PIN” score, means that gymnasts have to move up to the next level (White to Blue, Blue to Bronze, Bronze to Silver and Silver to Gold). Such is the success and popularity of these competitions that they have become known as the “PIN” competition, with some gymnasts seeing PIN attainment as being more important than winning a medal. These are truly inspiring and admired competitions which have been emulated by others.
If you want to take up gymnastics whatever your aspirations, be it recreational, tumbling, trampolining, men’s or women’s – and whether it be for fun or being an aspiring Louis Smith, you will probably start your journey at the recreational level. This grass roots introduction to our sport will make your journey fun, enjoyable and achievable as well as keeping you fit and healthy.
The London Olympic Games has inspired many to take up a sport, and the successes of the British gymnastics teams has meant many come "knocking on the door" of local gymnastics clubs keen to take up gymnastics activities.
For most, this means joining a recreational group within the club. This will be their first taste of "Gymnastics for All". Here they will take part in gymnastics activities, using the equipment available, and getting a feeling of what gymnastics entails.
Most gymnasts stay at this level, as many children are actively encouraged to take part in other sports and activities which fill up their (and their parents) week. However, some gymnasts are identified as having more potential, and the good coach will advise parents of pathways to take in advancing to a higher level.
We in London recognise that many wish to stay at recreational level, and provide a comprehensive and achievable competition structure. Competitions are held twice a year in and around the London region.
