Volunteer Week: "You finish with a feeling of pride, knowing you've played a small part in something quite special."

During the last 12 months, British Gymnastics have played a role in over 200 gymnastics events. The success of those events is in large due to volunteers that give up their time to get involved. During Volunteer Week it only seems right to focus on those that help to make these events happen.

Mason Monger has been volunteering at British Gymnastics events for a number of years now, as one of the army of volunteers that ensure the events run smoothly: "I volunteer to meet new people and create friendships and memory's whilst doing something that I love.

"I’ve volunteered at British Gymnastics events for five years now. Since then I’ve gained so much confidence in myself and have expanded my own personal skills. The range of roles that are available to take on are amazing and the buzz of being involved in the smooth running of events is a very rewarding thing."

Hartford School of Gymnastics also volunteer at events, with their gymnasts involved regularly during the medal ceremonies at the major British championships and even at the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow.

Michelle Oakes, Senior Coach at Hartford said: "Our team really love being involved with British Gymnastics events. It's an amazing experience being amongst the best gymnasts in the UK and it's a real privilege to carry the medals that are being presented to some of our gymnastics heroes.

"It's not just about walking on carrying medals. We learn some really valuable life skills too that have helped us in other aspects of our life. Every event is different, we work with different teams of people and each ceremony requires different formats which can sometimes be changed at the last minute.

"If someone was thinking of volunteering, I would say it's a great experience. You learn new skills, make friends and become part of a huge gymnastics community. You finish with a feeling of pride, knowing you've played a small part in something quite special. Once you have volunteered at one event, you will definitely want to come back and help at another."
