West Midlands Groups start the new season in style

Following a seven week delay due to the ‘Beast from the East’, the National Rhythmic Gymnastics competition season finally kicked off over the weekend of April 21st and 22nd with the seeding event for Groups and the Open Apparatus Championships for Juniors and Seniors.

The rankings achieved in the seeding event determine each group’s competition pathway for the remainder of the calendar year.  Espoir and Junior Groups may be classified as Level 5 which qualifies them for the British Group Championships and Elite Group League, Level 4 which qualifies them for the National Group League, or Level 3 which means that they participate in competitions run by Zones, Regions and clubs.

In a large Espoir section comprising 38 groups, Worcester Red (Mia Harding, Elodie McNelis, Georgia Smith and Eva Yordanov) finished 4th , Worcester Purple (Jessica Bettles, Scarlett Bunn, Athini Davis and Amber Whitaker) finished 5th and Elena (Luisa Balant, Kiah Everett, Sophie Marley and Francesca Tacud) joint 6th and by doing so qualified for both the British Championships and the Elite Group League.  Both Worcester Purple and the Elena Espoirs were making their first appearance at a National Competition, so deserve particular congratulations for their achievements. City of Birmingham Gems and City of Birmingham Sparkles qualified for the National Group League.

City of Birmingham Stars (Daisie Burke, Jessica Dodd, Amalie Howard, Alarna-Jai Turton and Olivia Whatmore) continued where they left off last season by finishing top of the Junior rankings, successfully integrating two new team members into last years quintet.  The Elena Juniors (Mckenzie Hickman, Lilie Johnson, Phoebe McDonald, Emily Mortimer and Anna Marie Starrs) also made a very good showing in this section finishing third in a field of 21.  Both will be at the Junior British Group Championships.  The City of Birmingham Pearls finished 13th and qualified for the National Group League.

The City of Birmingham Thorns (Nicole Allen, Jess Bateman, Sophie De-Bear, Tash Hodson and Lauren Moult) finished fifth in the Senior section and in doing so qualified for the Senior British Group Championships.

Emily and Sophie also competed as Individuals in Junior and Senior Open Apparatus Championships and achieved 6th and 4th places respectively.
