TeamGym Level 1

This course will qualify you to be an assistant coach for TeamGym.

TeamGym is an amazing discipline to coach. Participants perform spectacular routines made up of impressive skills, balances and dynamic moves. Your role is to support and develop these skills for participants to enjoy. You get to work with mixed age groups, both male and female participants, and form exciting partnerships.

Many of our level 1 coaches are parents, teachers, gymnasts, or coaches of other disciplines.

Who is this Aimed at:

People who are engaged with gymnastics and wish to develop their knowledge further and get involved in coaching.

Pre Requisites:

Learners must be at least 16 years old on the first day of the course.

What To Expect:

An informative course that develops all aspects of coaching, including ‘how to coach’ as well as discipline specific practical experience and knowledge.

Delivery Method:

Practical tutor led days, online activities and mentored hours:

Day 1 – Practical

Day 2 – Practical

Day 3 – Assessment

Do I Need To Bring Participants:

Days 1 and 2 - Minimum of one required

Day 3 Assessment - Minimum of three required

For Acrobatics gymnastics you are required to bring a minimum of one pair for days 1 and 2, and a minimum of 3 participants for the assessment.

Do I Need To Find A Mentor:

Your mentor will be someone to help you throughout the course and to support your development of gymnastics knowledge and the delivery methods such as the ‘How to Coach’ skills.

Before you enrol onto the course you will need to find a mentor. Your mentor is required to hold a minimum of a level 2 coaching qualification, or equivalent, within the same discipline.

What Resources Are Included:

1st4Sport logbook, discipline specific resource pack, and online resources. 


£319 for British Gymnastics members who hold a minimum of Silver membership at the time of enrolment onto the course (£419 for all other candidates).

Course costs include the delivery and initial assessment; any further assessments will incur additional charges.

  • Trampette skills: safety, erecting and dismantling, take-off and landing

Introducing Basic Skills:

  • Jumps and leaps
  • Stretched jump
  • Split leap 
  • Pirouettes 
  • Run and take off from a springboard

Tumbling Skills:

  • Back flic
  • Handspring
  • Backwards somersault preps using rebound
  • Round off
  • Linking cartwheel ¼ turn into back flic 

Trampette Skills:

  • Approach and arm action
  • Landing drills
  • Straight jump
  • Tucked jump
  • Star jump
  • Straight jump 180° and 360°
  • Straddle jump
  • Forwards roll onto stack mats
  • Landing drills
  • Forwards somersault preps using rebound
  • ¾ somersault to back lie

Trampette Vault Skills:

  • Approach and arm action
  • Landing drills
  • Squat on and jump off
  • Through vault
  • Jump to handstand to back landing on stacked mats

Floor Skills:

  • Good posture
  • Jumps and leaps
  • Forwards and backwards roll  
  • Handstand forwards roll 
  • Headstand (tucked, stretched); v-sit; single leg balances, arabesque, spider balance, half lever
  • Cartwheel with ¼ turn inwards
  • Bridge, japana and splits
  • Round off
  • Forwards walkover
  • Backwards walkover
  • Working together in a group

Assessment Method:

Practical – including planning and delivering an allocated skills matrix box

Logbook – including both written and delivered tasks

How Long Until I Am Fully Qualified:

Typically it takes four months to become qualified. However, you have up to one year from Day 1 of the course to complete the qualification if your first attempt at assessment is not successful.

When Is My Assessment:

Your assessment date has been pre-set as per the course dates. See the ‘find a course’ page for available courses and dates.

You will be assessed on your ability to:

  • Plan a session for all skills within your allocated skills box, issued four weeks prior to the assessment
  • Deliver the warm up, two of the skills and the cool down from your planned session

You need to bring at least three participants to the practical assessment

Box 1

Floor: Two exercises to improve a bridge

Vault: Handspring to back on stack of mats

Trampette: Front somersault (rebound only)

Tumble: Round off

Floor: Handstand forwards roll

A 20-30 second choreographed floor exercise: Including a jump, spin, and one acrobatic element from the syllabus

Box 2

Floor: Two exercises to improve forward splits

Vault: Squat on, jump off

Trampette: ¾ forwards somersault to lie on back on stack of mats

Tumble: Flic

Floor: Forwards walkover

A 20-30 second choreographed floor exercise: Including a jump, spin, and one acrobatic element from the syllabus

Assessment process

Briefing and set up - 10 mins

Warm up - 5 mins

1st Skill delivery - 10 mins

2nd Skill delivery - 10 mins

Cool down - 5 mins

Self-reflection - 5 mins

De-brief - 15 mins

Box 3

Floor: Two exercises to improve arm strength

Vault: Squat through

Trampette: ¾ forward somersault to lie on back on stack of mats

Tumble: Handspring

Floor: Two linked cartwheels

A 20-30 second choreographed floor exercise: Including a jump, spin, and single leg balance from the syllabus

Box 4

Floor: Two exercises to improve leg strength for jumping

Vault: Handspring to back on stack of mats

Trampette: Forwards somersault (rebound only)

Tumble: Handspring

Floor: Backwards walkover

A 20-30 second choreographed floor exercise: Including a jump, spin, and single leg balance from the syllabus
