Eating Disorder Awareness

This CPD module has been developed in partnership with Beat, the UK's leading Eating Disorder Charity.

As a Coach or Welfare Officer you might have gymnasts who come into the gym with an already diagnosed eating disorder, or a gymnast may develop one whilst they are a member. For these reasons we want to give you information and support, to not only manage what can be a challenging situation, but to ensure gymnasts are appropriately supported and safe when participating in gymnastics.

At British Gymnastics we want to create positive experiences for all and ensure that the gymnasts are at the heart of our sport. Providing education on this topic aims to support you to be more capable in your role.

Who is this Aimed at:

Helpers, Coaches, Gymnastics Activity Instructors and Welfare Officers (or equivalent) who are 18 years old or over.

What To Expect:

This CPD module consists of three eLearning modules, a best practice webcast, reflective videos and tasks, a quiz, additional information and key contacts.

Delivery Method:

Self-paced online learning.

Duration:

Approximately 2.5 hours to complete.

Outcomes:

By the end of this awareness module, you will:

- Be aware of the common eating disorders and be able to identify their risk factors, signs, and symptoms.
- Understand why in sports such as gymnastics, there is a greater risk of disordered eating and eating disorders.
- Be aware that coaching practices can impact the development or progression of an eating disorder.
- Understand that you are ideally placed to spot the signs and symptoms of an eating disorder and get someone the referral they need.

How Will I Be Assessed:

The module contains a 12-question Quiz. You must get 75% correct to pass, before you can gain your certificate.

Pre Requisites:

Helpers, Level 1 and above Coaches and Gymnastics Activity Instructors (18 years and over).

Welfare Officers who have the Time to Listen qualification or an equivalent recognised qualification (18 years and over).

Learner must be at least 18 years old on the first day of the course

- Why there is a greater risk of disordered eating and eating disorders in gymnastics.

- The most common types of eating disorders and their key characteristics.

- The signs and symptoms of the two main eating disorders.

Factors Contributing to Eating Disorders

This section will look at:

- The factors that can contribute to eating disorders.

- A brief overview of the impact eating disorders can have on a gymnast's health and performance.

- Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport and the role it plays in a gymnast's health and performance.

Risk Factors Specific to Gymnastics

This section will:

- Explore the specific gymnastics related risk factors that could lead to an eating disorder.

- Help you to identify the signs and symptoms we may see in our gymnasts.

Best Practice Webcast

The webcast will primarily focus on exploring best practice in relation to the information provided in the rest of the module.
