Artistic Worlds - 7th for Beth in floor final

Tokyo-2011---Girls16/10 Tokyo: Britain’s Beth Tweddle finished in 7th in a high quality floor competition on the final day of the 2011 artistic gymnastics World Championships in Tokyo.
The 3 time world champion, had a small step out of the floor on her second tumble to score 14.500. The title was won by Russia’s Ksesnia Afanseva, a late replacement for teammate Victoria Komova.

Beth Tweddle: “Today proves I'm still up there with the best as I have the difficulty, I've just got to work a lot more on my landings ahead of London. The week has been a great success as we achieved our number one aim and we've got the British women's team qualified for 2012 so that’s now the focus.”

The championships has now come to a close with Britain reflecting on a several highs - notably the performance of the women’s team who qualified for London 2012 and finished 5th in the final, outstanding performances by Daniel Purvis (4th) and Hannah Whelan (9th) in the all-around event and World Championship pommel bronze for Louis Smith.


The final was one of high quality with none of the gymnasts making any major errors. First up, all-around champion Wieber set the benchmark with a clean and confident routine for 14.700. Mitchell, Yao and Raisman all followed suit, young American Raisman delighting the crowd with her nailed tumbles.

Next up was Sui of China, beautiful leaps and spins in an elegant routine to score 15.066.

Beth followed, her tumbles easily the most explosive of anyone’s but the smallest of steps off the floor on her second pass and small hops elsewhere restricted her score to 14.500 and 7th place. Chelaru entertained with her chirpy upbeat routine before Afanaseva a later replacement produced the routine of the competition, perfect tumbles and precise dance work for 15.133, the Russian was visibly ecstatic.
