On the 3rd March the annual American Cup took place at Madison Square Garden in New York. Representing GB were first year senior, Rebecca Tunney and world number one Daniel Purvis.
Daniel Purvis produced another superb display on the international stage to take 4th place with 89.766 in the event which was won by American Daniel Levya, followed by Ukrainian Mykola Kuksenkov in second and Marcel Nguyen from Germany in third.
In one of her first major internationals as a senior, Rebecca produced solid routines on bars, floor and vault. Difficulties on beam unfortunately lowered her overall total but the experience of competing in front of the TV cameras at Madison Square, with some of the best gymnasts in the world, will be great experience for the youngster. Rebecca finished with an overall score of 52.132 and 8th place.
Jordyn Weiber from the USA took her third American Cup title, she was followed by teammate Aly Raisman in second and Romania’s rising star, Larisa Iordache in third. Gabby Douglas, also from the US, achieved the highest overall score of the day, performing four outstanding routines. However, she was the alternate and her scores did not count towards the final standings.
