24/06/12 Echo Arena, Liverpool: The final day of the 2012 Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics British Championships saw the top apparatus performers do battle to claim individual titles.
Following the tension and drama of the previous days Olympic trials it gave a chance for some of the seniors to atone for any errors in a last bid to impress selectors, whist for the younger gymnasts, particularly those in the men’s ‘masters’ that combined the age-groups, it was an opportunity to compete under pressure in a huge arena and on podium which is great preparation for championships to come.
The stand out routine of the day came from Louis Smith who scored a huge 16.375 on pommel horse, even finding time on his dismount to tap his chest in celebration proving he is well on track and prepared to once again go for the medals at the Olympic Games.
Beth Tweddle on bars was in similarly impressive form scoring 15.850; she decided to withdraw from the floor final in order to rest. Niamh Rippin took both the floor (14.25) and vault (14.150) titles with Jenni Pinches the beam champion (14.300) . Daniel Keatings on parallel bars (15.700) again proved he is back to form along with Sam Oldham on high bar (15.300). Kristian Thomas took vault (16.200) and floor (15.525) and Daniel Purvis rings (15.200).
The seniors now await team selection news ahead of the official announcement on July 4th.
