Falcons Gymnastics Academy was officially opened on Friday 31st August by Olympic gymnast, Imogen Cairns. The new gymnastics centre, which is located at Tarka Tennis centre in Barnstaple, cost over £900,000. British Gymnastics contributed to the development of the facility from their 2011/12 capital funding from Sport England which boasts some of the London 2012 Olympic equipment, including the competition floor area.
Head coach, Mike Beagley is over the moon that his club is playing a part in the Olympic legacy and with the success of the London Games his main aim is to continue developing the elite side of the sport and increasing participation at the club. “The new facility will allow us to double our membership and create one of the best facilities in the country. It will enable us to host national competitions as well as county and South West level events. There are already two members of the academy who are part of the Great Britain squad and who knows, we may now be able to get to the stage where we’re producing the next Olympic champions."
London 2012 Olympian Imogen Cairns added, “It’s fantastic to see this new facility. Following on from the Olympics, gymnastics is in high demand and gymnasts have been inspired to achieve. This new centre will do both in helping to increase the opportunities for more people to take part and provide an opportunity for gymnasts to achieve their potential.”
