The 2012 Glasgow FIG World Cup and the 2015 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, also in Glasgow, are two major events announced as part of UK Sports National Lottery funded £27 million Gold Event Series that aims to bring over 70 of the world’s most prestigious sporting events to the UK.
The sold out World Cup this December and the 2015 World Championships, which are due to be launched in December, continue the trend of the biggest and best gymnastics events coming to the UK following World Championships and European Championships in various disciplines in recent years.
UK Sport announced its Gold Event Series last week with the aims to support British athletes’ preparation and qualification for Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, whilst giving an opportunity for 2.5 million spectators to continue to experience world class Olympic and Paralympic sport on home soil.
Liz Nicholl, CEO of UK Sport, said: “In developing the Gold Event Series, UK Sport is building on the success of London 2012 and supporting the UK’s on-going legacy goals. The continued hosting of world class events supports our athletes’ performance ambitions, provides a unique platform to inspire participation, and allows sport to contribute towards the economic growth agenda.
“The Gold Event Series would not be possible without ongoing support from The National Lottery and a close working partnership with Government.”
