GB’s women's artistic gymnasts, Kelly Simm, Claudia Fragapane, Ellie Downie and Becky Downie took team bronze at the recent Elite Gym Massilia in France. The strong squad took the final podium place behind Russian in second and Romania in first.
The competition consisted of team, all around and event finals with mixed junior and senior teams which saw Downie sisters, Ellie and Becky competing in their first international together.
In the all-around it was Romanian star, Larisa Iordache who took the top spot with 57.525 nearly two marks ahead of teammate Andreea Munteanu in second (55.675) with Russian Ekatarina Kramarenko taking bronze (54.825). Britain’s Claudia Fragapane finished strongly in 6th with 54.350 with an impressive 14.100 on the floor, second only to Iordache with a routine that included and double Arabian and double straight back somersault. Junior Ellie Downie finished in 12th with 53.450 with Kelly Simm extremely close behind in 13th with 53.425. Ellie and Kelly performed powerful double twisting Yurchenko’s on the vault scoring well with 14.850 and 14.700. Becky Downie showed some impressive skills on both the beam and bars but errors left her out of the finals.
In the event finals, it was junior Ellie Downie who stole the show, taking two bronze medals on the vault and floor as well as finishing fourth on the bars. Ellie showed some impressive upgrades which included a one and a half walk out to double Arabian on the floor and as she is only a first year junior she will be looking to continue to improve and make the junior European squad next year to to make her mark on the international scene. Claudia Fragapane finished fourth in the floor finals and Kelly sixth on the vault.
