Maisie Methuen 4th and Alice Kinsella 5th in European final

Our British gymnasts put in brilliant performances to only narrowly miss out on podium places in the 2016 junior all-around final at the European Championships in Bern (SUI). Maisie Methuen placed in 4th with Alice Kinsella in 5th both in a hugely tough battle for the medals.

Maisie scored 53.599 and Alice scored 53.498 across the four apparatus with third placed Basille of Italy marginally ahead on 54.266.

Maisie said after “It feels amazing to have finished so high, not what I expected when I came into the championships but also in way to then be so close to a medal is hard. I never look at the scores as I’m competing and it was only at the end I saw how close it was. Overall I’m really happy, my bars routine could have gone better and that could have made the difference. I’m proud to have come 4th in Europe and I’m looking forward to the apparatus final on Sunday now.”

Maisie started on the uneven bars and showed great strength to battle through her routine scoring a solid 12.733. On beam Maisie performed a beautiful series of acrobatic skills early on in her difficult routine; she then had to fight through some wobbles but did so well and scored 13.600. Maisie’s floor work was great to watch with lots of expression and performance and well controlled tumbling skills to score her 13.200. Last up on vault Maisie was flawless scoring 14.066 to give her a total of 53.599.

Alice began her competition on vault matching her performance from qualifying exactly with a precise pass to score 13.966 points. On bars she looked confident with her difficult routine, and although there were some losses in execution she finished well dismounting for 13.500 points. Alice had to wait a long time to perform on beam and couldn’t quite stop her momentum after first series and fell, she jumped back on and finished her routine with a small hop on dismount to score 12.466. On floor Alice fought back with great twisting tumbles to start, and a perfect landing on her last pass to score her 13.566 for an all-around total of 53.498.

The next competition in these championship see our senior women compete in tomorrows (Saturday's) team final. The final will be shown live on the BBC red button and online from 15.50.
