Taeja James from the City of Birmingham has been crowned the 2017 Junior Women’s All-Around British Champion with a score of 53.950. Following hot on her heels and taking the silver was first year junior, Amelie Morgan from Slough with 53.050. Taking the final spot on the podium was Jolie Ruckley from Cardiff with a score of 50.950.
Taeja, who is a junior European team medallist, started off her competition strongly on the vault with a neat full twisting Yurchenko. Moving on to the bars she performed a clean and steady routine. Unfortunately, on the beam, Taeja had to count a fall on a difficult round off straight back but with such high difficulty throughout she still scored highly and nailed her floor routine, which included a beautiful triple twist, to take the title.
Taeja said after her performance: “I’m really, really happy to be British junior champion, it feels amazing. My competition started on vault which went well to help build my confidence, I did okay on beam but fell on one of my hardest moves, bars went will and then I finished on floor. It’s amazing to compete here in Liverpool, the arena is really nice. I’m really happy to be champion and looking forward to the apparatus finals on Sunday.”
Amelie also began on the vault, performing a strong full twisting Yurchenko. She performed well on the bars with full twisting double back dismount, produced a solid beam and an expressive floor.
Jolie performed strongly throughout with lovely choreography on the floor and and was steady and confident on the beam.
Finishing in 4th place was Park Wrekn’s Laura Beasley with 50.140, and in 5th and 6th was The Academy duo Phoebe Jakubczyk (49.000) and Zoe Simmons (48.750).
