You may be aware that the legislation regarding data protection is about to change. A new regulation called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is now in place and set to become adopted by UK Law. The changes impact many of the ways organisations work and their processes related to personal data, including membership data.
How this affects gymnast membership
A gymnast who joins a local club also becomes a member of British Gymnastics. Historically, clubs have provided details about the gymnast to British Gymnastics to allow us to activate membership benefits, including insurance, and to send out their membership pack. Due to the change in the legislation, from October 2017, clubs will no longer be able to do this. Therefore, gymnast members (or their parent/guardian if they are under 16 years old) will need to join or renew their British Gymnastics membership directly with us.
Before the new membership year starts on 1st October 2017, gymnasts or their parents/guardians will be provided with everything they need to know to complete the new membership process. This will be in the form of a leaflet provided by their local gymnastics club.
We have developed some Frequently Asked Questions about the new online membership process to help gymnasts or their parents/guardians. The new online membership system will be available in a new section of our website from 1st October 2017.
How this affects coach, judge and club memberships
Renewal dates for coaches, judges and club memberships vary throughout the year. Your club will notify you when your membership is due for renewal but if you think your membership may be due for renewal you can visit the new section of the website from 1st October to complete your membership with us for 2017-18. Our membership system will know when you are due to renew and it won’t allow you to complete the process until then.
If you are a judge, perform a club role or perhaps a mixture of both, the system will help you select the membership type you need.
