British Gymnastics launch new symposia series

British Gymnastics are excited to announce the new series of symposia available to all coaches in 2018/19.

For coaches looking for an opportunity to develop themselves, the symposia – which are a series of workshops held over a weekend at Lilleshall National Sports Centre – provide a perfect chance to network and learn from a range of industry experts including national and high-performance coaches.

This year we are beginning a new structure to our symposia that will allow both young and experienced coaches to develop to maximise their learning and opportunity within their clubs.

For the 2018/19 series, the theme is Supporting a Developing Gymnast: A Coach’s Tool Kit. This theme will run across the symposia for all disciplines.

Alex McGregor, Performance Pathways Manager: "We are excited to be able to offer this new series of symposia, with specific themes which will allow gymnastics coaches to consider all the areas around a developing athlete.

"By bringing some disciplines together during these weekends, we are going to see these themes allow coaches to work through commonalities, whilst embracing the differences. We hope that we will be able to access and engage the new, younger coaches within our sport and allow them to build their knowledge and experience base with us on this journey."

The symposia will run across various weekends this year (see dates below) with coaches, judges, tutors and assessors given the opportunity to learn about the following:

Nutrition; what advice should be given to a developing athlete and understanding how to prepare meals and snacks.

Strength and conditioning; what focuses should be taken into consideration as an athlete develops in skill and maturity as well as ideas to vary conditioning sessions within the gym.

Generation Z; they are the future, so how can we maximise our interaction with the newest generation of gymnasts to make sure that they are engaged in the coaching process.

There will also be technical specific sessions relating to the disciplines delivered by national and high-performance coaches, as well as cross-discipline content to give fresh ideas for your training.

Dates for the 2018/19 symposia are:

8th and 9th September 2018 – acrobatic and rhythmic
12th and 13th January 2019 – men’s artistic and women’s artistic
19th and 20th January 2019 – trampoline, tumbling and DMT
