The junior women’s artistic team of Amelie Morgan (Academy/Portishead), Halle Hilton (South Essex), Annie Young (Norfolk), Ondine Achampong (Sapphire/Hemel Hempstead) and Phoebe Jakubczyk (Academy/Portishead) produced some incredible performances in the junior European team final to take the bronze medal with a score of 158.931 behind Italy (161.063) in gold and Russia (160.363) in silver.
Performing to a packed home crowd at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow, the young team were calm and collected from the word go, nailing all 16 of their team routines without any major errors to claim the bronze. The girls started strongly on the floor and kept up the momentum on the vault. After four clean bar routines, it left beam as the final apparatus. Each gymnast rose to the challenge and finished the competition just as strongly as they had started.
In the all-around event, Amelie Morgan made history by finishing with a silver medal, GB’s best ever result in an artistic junior European all-around final. Finishing up for the team on their final event, the beam, Amelie produced the routine of her life under pressure to secure herself a place on the podium with a score of 53.832, behind Italy’s rising star Giorgia Villa with 55.065. Teammate Phoebe also impressed in the all-around event, finishing in 5th place with a score of 52.366.
Amelie said after: “We’re really, really happy! We all performed really well today and everyone did their job. We felt well prepared and managed to enjoy the competition which is really important and helps to calm your nerves.
Personally, I’m delighted - to win a European all-around medal is incredible! I’ve worked really hard and am so grateful to everyone that’s supported me. To share this experience with the team makes it extra special.”
Amelie also qualified to the individual vault, beam and floor finals with Halle joining her in the beam final. All apparatus finals take place on Sunday.
