UK Sport Chair, Dame Katherine Grainger visited British Gymnastics today to find out more about our world class programme and latest athlete-focused initiatives. The visit comes as part of Dame Katherine’s pledge to visit every Summer and Winter Olympic and Paralympic sport following her appointment as UK Sport Chair in April 2017.
Dame Katherine's day consisted of meeting key Executives and Directors including CEO Jane Allen, Executive Director of Sport Martin Reddin, and Performance Director, James Thomas. This was followed by a tour of the athlete training facilities, meeting artistic and trampoline gymnasts making their final preparations ahead of their respective World Championships. Athlete Ambassadors, Kristian Thomas and Hannah England also joined Dame Katherine and the athletes for lunch.
Kristian Thomas said "It was fantastic to meet with Katherine and discuss how my role as Athlete Ambassador contributes to the British Gymnastics high performance programme. As former athletes, we both share a passion to nurture and develop positive cultures in which athletes can deliver their potential."
Dame Katherine spoke highly of her visit: "I've had a very enjoyable day at British Gymnastics. It's been highly impressive to see first-hand all of the great work that is going on with the sport. I would like to thank the team at British Gymnastics for welcoming me and giving me time with the athletes, staff and leadership group. It is clear British Gymnastics is working hard to build on its huge success over recent years and I look forward to seeing what comes next for the sport."
CEO Jane Allen commented, "We all enjoyed Dame Katherine’s visit today and the opportunity to share some our key high performance and athlete initiatives. The teams really appreciated the opportunity to meet with her, and hear about her incredible accomplishments as one of Britain's most decorated Olympians and be inspired by her work at UK Sport. British Gymnastics is going through an exciting period and our teams are soon to compete at World Championships. We have a great partner in UK Sport and their ongoing investment of National Lottery funding is key to helping us achieve success."
