The 2019 British Gymnastics Championship Series begins this Thursday (25th-28th), and will kick-start four days of gymnastics at M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool. Across the four days, champions will be crowned in four disciplines; acrobatic, aerobic, rhythmic and TeamGym.
As we close in on the start of the Championships, this week we’re focussing on TeamGym. Here’s all you need to know:
So what is TeamGym?
Teams of gymnasts compete across three different categories; women, men and mixed. The teams consist of between six and 12 gymnasts that compete across three disciplines. Each team will choreograph a floor routine, a series of tumbling passes and a series of trampet runs. All three require great teamwork, excellent technique and huge acrobatic elements.
The TeamGym hall will be packed throughout the weekend, as both qualifications and finals will take place in youth, junior, senior and disability categories.
Who are the ones to watch?
Last year the senior titles were split between three different clubs. City of Newcastle Gym Academy took gold in the women’s competition, Bracknell Gymnastics Club won in the mixed event and Hawth Gymnastics Club came out on top in the men’s.
All three will be hoping to do the same this year, but they will face tough competition. With the teams changing year-on-year it’s a hard discipline to predict, which makes it all the more exciting!
