British Gymnastics is saddened by the news that Bruno Grandi, President of the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) from 1997 until 2016, passed away on 13th September in Italy, at the age of 85.
His greatest achievement as President, he said, was to have elevated gymnastics to the top tier of sports on the Olympic programme.
"Today, we are mourning the loss of a warm-hearted man who showed us the way with all the passion he had for the sport," said FIG President Morinari Watanabe.
"With unstoppable energy, he championed justice in sport and always placed the safety of athletes first. His values and his spirit will continue to inspire us for years to come."
CEO Jane Allen and FIG Executive Member, Martin Reddin MBE “We are sorry to hear of the passing of Bruno Grandi, our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time. He was a great supporter of the international events British Gymnastics hosted, especially the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow. He will be missed by many in the gymnastics community.”
