Reflecting on lockdown as gymnastics returns

Thank you graphic 750x500
After more than three months, gymnastics, albeit with a few restrictions, is slowly but surely returning!

Clubs in Northern Ireland and England have started to reopen over recent days and weeks, and we hope that those in Scotland and Wales will soon be able to follow suit.

We want to take this opportunity to thank clubs and coaches for their incredible efforts in keeping gymnasts active during this time. Here are some of the things that we’ve seen from the community during lockdown.

Video sessions
Group video sessions have become the norm! We have seen clubs coaching conditioning exercises, choreographing new dances and having general catchups with their participants. Gymnasts have embraced this new way of taking part.

Most recently, we were delighted to see that many gymnasts from the community took part in ‘Gymnasts, Do Your Thing!’ Watch our full compilation.

Gymnasts At Home
To help keep younger gymnasts active, we enlisted the help of some of the elite gymnasts to set challenges to do at home. From practicing fundamental skills in the living room to fitness sessions in the garden, we’ve discovered new ways for gymnasts to stay in touch with the sport.

Love to Move
It’s not just the community’s youngest members who have been staying active! Thanks to the British Gymnastics Foundation, older people and loved ones have managed to get moving in the comfort of their homes through the Love to Move programme. Take part in the Foundation’s online sessions.

Step Forward
Through our Step Forward Plan, we have been working hard to keep clubs informed on the best steps to take when reopening, and have provided free assets to use and put up in clubs.

During this time, many of our clubs have been working hard behind the scenes to create Covid-safe environments for returning participants by adjusting the layout of their facilities, changing the ways people enter and leave the gym, creating new timetables for sessions and much, much more!

Clubs are now at different stages in their return to reopening, due to government guidelines. Wherever your club is on that journey, the return of gymnastics wouldn’t be possible without the incredible commitment and attention to detail at each and every club. We understand that what has been asked of clubs hasn’t been easy, but due to the circumstances has been completely necessary. We thank you for your continued drive to provide the best possible environment for gymnasts to learn.

We can’t wait to see everyone back doing what they love!
