Ways we're supporting a return for our gymnastics community

Since the coronavirus pandemic began to make an impact on our sport back in March, we have been inspired by the togetherness of our members to pull through this unprecedented period, doing all that they can to ensure a safe return to the sport.

We are committed to continuing to keep our community active, healthy and safe, supporting our members in the best ways we can.

Here are some of the measures we have taken to help people return to the sport.

Membership subsidies
During lockdown we reached out to our clubs to discuss the difficulties that they were facing. One of the fears that was highlighted was the ability for members to renew at a time when there was a lot of uncertainty. We also consulted with our Club Stakeholder Advisory Group, a body made up of 10 representative members from varying roles and club types across the gymnastics community, on the impact of this and it was agreed that we would make some changes to our membership fees.

To support all of our recreational and competitive members, we have subsidised the annual membership fee up until 31st October 2020:

  • Recreational members - £15 for 2020/21 membership reduced from £19 in 2019/20
  • Competitive members - £35 in 2020/21 membership reduced from £43 in 2019/20

For coach members the subsidy is valid all year across the four entry points:

  • Coach members - £62 for 2020/21 membership reduced from £78 in 2019/20*

Step Forward Plan

Working in collaboration with our Home Countries, we created the Step Forward Plan – our three step road map, detailing how we would help bring about a return for the sport. As part of this plan we created a number of guides, FAQs, updates and toolkits to help clubs and partners prepare for operating in a Covid-secure way and to explain the changes to gymnasts and parents. We also produced banners, posters and floor markers that clubs and partners could order for free to be put up in their facility to help keep their workforce, members and their families safe.

We appreciate that there are still clubs in our community that are having difficulties accessing their facility and we will continue to help in any way we can.

We are continuously monitoring the situation around Covid-19. Over this next year we will update clubs and partners with all the information that they need through our Step Forward area and the new Club Support Hub that is coming soon.

Due to the inability to run workshops and conferences, we focused our efforts on running free online webinars for coaches and club managers. We have covered various topics including how to prepare for a safe return, how to re-engage with gymnasts, employment, financial planning, good governance and health & safety.

Over the next three months we will be hosting another series of free webinars to support people who run clubs.

Gymnastics at home insurance and activities
To make sure our community could stay active outside of the gym; we extended our insurance cover for members to do activities at home and outdoors. Any virtual activities based around fitness, conditioning and flexibility, or any content created or endorsed by British Gymnastics, is covered by our membership which includes our fully comprehensive insurance.

To provide further activity support to clubs, we also adapted a number of our programmes, including Core Proficiency and FUNdamentals, to be deliverable at home so gymnasts still have the opportunity to progress if not able to go to their gym.

Hardship Grants
To support members whose families were experiencing financial difficulties due to coronavirus, we worked alongside our partner charity, the British Gymnastics Foundation, to make extra funds available to those in need. We heard many stories from parents about how gymnastics has benefited their child and we’re pleased that we have managed to help many of those who applied to overcome hardship and stay in the sport.

Membership discounts on brands
We know Covid-19 has brought about many financial challenges, so this year we have worked with a number of retailers to bring you discounts on a wide range of products everything from clothing to food and gifts. We will continue to add more offers over the coming months. For the latest deals, you can find out more in your Member Portal using your unique link that will be sent to you when you renew or join. We will also continue to provide special offers to members through our British Gymnastics Official Shop and exclusive access to competitions and discounts on events when they resume.

We will continue to invest in the resources and support to keep our members safe and to enable them to continue enjoying gymnastics as we battle coronavirus.
