The 2021 Artistic Gymnastics British Championships is to be rescheduled from March to later in the calendar year.
The decision comes following consultation with the Technical Committees of both men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics, and other stakeholders. It was unanimously agreed that it wouldn’t be feasible for gymnasts to prepare properly for the Championships having just returned to training following recent lockdowns and other on-going restrictions.
The event was due to take place at M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool, from 11th-14th March, but a later date in 2021 will now be agreed.
Matthew Greenwood, Events Director, said: "We were very much looking forward to the British Gymnastics events programme starting again after these past twelve months without any gymnastics events, but the safety of the gymnasts has been and will continue to be the number one priority. We have made difficult decisions about cancelling and postponing events throughout 2020 and in to 2021.
"Everyone is very sad that this event won’t take place in March, but we believe that postponing is the right decision to give the gymnasts and coaches the time they need to prepare. We hope that this decision will be appreciated by clubs, who we know have been working tirelessly to maintain the activity for all their members, not just the high-performance athletes, in these incredibly difficult circumstances.
"We will continue to work with the Technical Committees over the coming weeks to establish the best time to reschedule the event and will make further announcements about this as soon as possible."
British Gymnastics clubs that regularly enter gymnasts into the British Championships have been notified of the postponement. We will provide an update once a rearranged date has been agreed and confirmed.
