Gymnastics clubs in England to close under latest lockdown measures

Following the latest update from Prime Minister, Boris Johnson (4th January 2021), all British Gymnastics clubs in England are advised to close with immediate effect.

This is incredibly disappointing news for everyone in the community including club managers, coaches and of course gymnasts who will once again be unable to do the thing they love, but at this time, with Coronavirus (Covid-19) cases continuing to rise and the country entering the highest Covid threat level, we must play our part in saving lives and protecting the NHS.

More information about what is and isn’t allowed under the latest lockdown can be found on the government website. The new restrictions become law on Wednesday 6th January, but people should follow them now.

For the gymnastics community, unfortunately these new restrictions mean that all indoor sports facilities must close, except to allow elite training* to take place.

We know this is a very worrying time for people in the sport and we will continue to provide the latest information and updates as soon as we can.

We are working to identify funding streams available to clubs to help navigate this unprecedented time. Please visit the government website to search for the latest funding available to you.

As part of the #SaveOurSports campaign, we have joined more than 50 sporting organisations to sign a New Year’s resolution for sport. We are evidencing the impact that lockdown and the safety protocols are having on clubs and are pushing for further financial support for all gymnastics providers. We will provide a further update as soon as we have one.

We understand that clubs and gymnasts across the UK are experiencing the impacts of these restrictions. If you live in Scotland or Wales, please contact Scottish Gymnastics and Welsh Gymnastics directly. If you live in Northern Ireland please check the website and follow the British Gymnastics Northern Ireland Facebook page for regular updates. We would advise that throughout this time, you continue to check your Local Authority guidance and our Step Forward Plan FAQs for the most up to date information and advice.

2. A junior squad gymnast in MAG/WAG/TRA who has been selected for or identified/confirmed by the National Coach as working towards major international selection (European or World Championships) within the 1st half of 2021.

An elite athlete for the continued Return to Training for Non-Olympic disciplines is defined as:
