Update on the reintroduction of coach education - British Gymnastics

Update on the reintroduction of coach education

Following the announcement of the roadmap for a return to gymnastics in England on 22nd February, we wanted to provide an update for those in the community regarding coach education.

We’ve been working closely with all of the home countries to understand the differences in local government guidance during this time. Please rest assured that we are working hard to see the reintroduction of some level of coach education as soon as possible as we know how important this is to the community.

We hope the video above from Head of Education, Kathryn Bonner, and the information below provides an outline of what we have been working towards throughout the pandemic, and how we intend to move forward with coach education.

Development of Return to Coach Contact Framework
In England, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has approved ‘phase one’ of Return to Coach Contact that will allow the supporting and spotting of gymnasts by coaches in a limited capacity. We’ll be releasing more details about this to eligible clubs and coaches in England shortly, ahead of the proposed return date April.

We’re still awaiting timescales for the Return of Coach Contact in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Digital courses and assessments
We’re currently adapting assessment protocols and setting up a digital platform, linking in with 1st4sport to ensure any adaptations we make are compliant and qualifications awarded during this time are valid.
Video assessments will still be reliant on contact between coaches and gymnasts. As soon as we are given the go ahead to re-introduce coach contact, we will begin to invite those who have waited longest for assessment to be part of a pilot before rolling out to the wider community.
We are also adapting course delivery to temporarily enable courses to be completed online. As part of this we will be filming some skills showing coach support, so that tutors will have practical examples to show. This will also be dependent on the return of coach contact, or the ability to work with gymnasts in the Elite Sport Return to Training programme that have received approval to continue training with coach contact.
To ensure online courses are ready, we are working to adapt all activities to suit this delivery method. Unfortunately, this does take time so please do bear with us. As soon as we have more information about how online courses can be accessed, we’ll be sharing it with you.
Courses coming soon
An exciting development we’re pleased to tell you about is that our ‘Time to Listen’ and Level 3 theory courses are currently being piloted, ready to roll out in an online format. We’re hoping to be able to advertise these more widely in the coming weeks.
We also have an online module called ‘The Coaching Process’ aimed at Level 3 and above coaches that is almost ready to release. We’ll be in contact with clubs and coaches eligible for this when it is available.
We understand the frustrations of people in the community, whether that’s those starting their coaching journey, or those hoping to progress further.
We also understand that there is a huge amount to do but hope that you have found this update useful.
