A gymnastics club from Stockton-on-Tees has raised thousands of pounds through Crowdfunder to support themselves through the coronavirus pandemic.
Gym Mad Gymnastics Academy, based in Ingleby Barwick, is a not for profit gymnastics club that provides classes to over 400 gymnasts each week.
A year ago, the club was forced to close due to Covid-19 and they saw many of their activities and events cancelled including a trip to Iceland as part of Great Britain’s cohort at EuroGym, one of the biggest gymnastics festivals in the world.
Last summer, in response to the financial challenges posed by the pandemic, the club set up a Crowdfunder page.
What is Crowdfunder?
Crowdfunder is a fundraising platform that allows clubs and organisations to tell their story and engage with not just their members, but their local community and businesses to raise money for worthy causes.
Crowdfunder has match funding available from a selection of UK partners, including Sport England, to support clubs and organisations in fundraising efforts set-up to combat the financial difficulty caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
British Gymnastics is supporting clubs interested in creating new crowdfunding projects through guidance and online support. Clubs that start new projects and are active with their campaigns will also be contacted and offered incentives, including zoom calls with some elite gymnasts, to help pleas for donations.
Lyndsay Madden, Head Coach and Facility Manager at Gym Mad commented: "Our members responded really well after we launched our Crowdfunder scheme.
"We set up a number of rewards and ways to pledge and it helped members to select how they would like to donate and also gain something from it too such as, an online event, merchandise or voucher which worked really well."
The club managed to go above and beyond their target of £1,500, raising over £4,500 which included match funding from Sport England.
"Thanks to donations from our members, our fundraising has gone towards extra supplies for the measures that we need to take to open out of lockdown including hand sanitiser, cleaning products, social distance markers, PPE for coaches such as masks and gloves, and bags to supply stocks in. The funds have also supported our running costs to get us through the lockdown and some small equipment.
"Our members, coaches and parents have been fully supportive and we are excited to resume gymnastics activity and start offering our new ideas as soon as we possibly can."

We have also created a Crowdfunder Support Guide to provide further information on how crowdfunding and match funding works.
